Arts & Entertainment Summer season opener Collective Spirits 2011 benefits The Bascom

Each spring, The Bascom presents Collective Spirits, a three-day celebration of wine, food and the arts marking the opening of the Summer Season on the Highlands/Cashiers Plateau. From May 19-21, wine and dine throughout the weekend with some of the worlds most revered winemakers and the Southeast’s most renowned chefs. All will converge on Highlands and Cashiers among art lovers, community leaders and special guests for Private Home Wine Dinners, the Grand Tasting “Meet & Greet” Wine Market, benefit wine dinners at local restaurants, the “Catch the Spirit” Village Sip & Stroll, an exclusive “Reserve Wine” Tasting and the finale - the Grand Gala Benefit Dinner and Auction at The Bascom.

This year, Collective Spirits welcomes renowned Chef John Besh from Restaurant August in New Orleans, Chef John Fleer (formerly Chef at Blackberry Farm) now at Canyon Kitchen in Cashiers, Chef Carvel Gould from Canoe in Atlanta, Chef Frank Lee from S.N.O.B. (Slightly North of Broad) in Charleston and Chef Todd Ginsberg from Bocado in Atlanta.

All will lend their prowess creating unforgettable menus for the Opening Night Private Home Wine Dinners. To pair with this culinary creativity, wineries like Brochelle Vineyards, Tuck Beckstoffer Wines, DuMol, Paul Hobbs Wines, Reynolds Family, Silver Oak, Twomey, Schug Carneros Estate, Lambert Bridge Winery, Miner Family Wines and Ehlers Estate will have principals and winemakers in attendance to share their wines and speak about their craft.

On Friday, the Grand Tasting “Meet & Greet” Wine Market is a ‘stock your cellar’ celebration featuring an assortment of the finest wines from producers like Authentique Vin - Thomas Meunier Selections; B.R. Cohn, Brochelle Vineyards, David Arthur Vineyards, DuMol, Ehlers Estate, Fisher Vineyards, Lambert Bridge Winery, Miner Family, Paul Hobbs Wines, Nickel & Nickel, Reynolds Family Wines, Rubicon, Schug Carneros Estate, Silver Oak Cellars, Solena Estate, Twomey Cellars and Zacherle Wines. All wines will be available for purchase through Mountain Fresh Grocery in Highlands.

Following the Grand Tasting, local restaurants will offer intimate winemaker dinners, Gamekeeper’s Tavern will feature wines of Schug Carneros Estate and B.R. Cohn. Madison’s Restaurant will feature wines of Brochelle Vineyards and Solena Estate. Ristorante Paoletti will feature Paul Hobbs Wines. Wolfgang’s Restaurant and Wine Bistro will feature Lambert Bridge Winery and Reynolds Family Wines. Reservations should be made directly with the restaurant.

New this year to Collective Spirits is the “Catch the Spirit” Village Sip & Stroll sponsored by Bryson’s Food Store. Guests will spend Saturday afternoon meandering through Bryson’s Food Store located at Highlands Plaza and the shops at Town Square located on Main Street tasting wine and learning more about what goes into each bottle.

The weekend culminates in a Grand Gala Benefit Wine Dinner and Auction Saturday evening at The Bascom. The auction includes some rare and collectible French wines, a generous donation of Bascom patron Ruthie Watts; a VIP weekend for two couples with tours, tastings and dinners at Reynolds Family Winery and Lambert Bridge Winery; an exclusive trip to Charleston during the Spoleto Festival and, a 15L bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne will be up for bid.
