Arts & Entertainment WCU art museum exhibit looks at country and city

“Marsh, Columbia, New Jersey” by Louis Louis Finkelstein (1988, oil, 54 inches by 54 inches) is part of “Rough and Tumble,” on exhibit through Aug. 5 at the Fine Art Museum at Western Carolina University. The exploration of urban versus rural environments is the focus of an upcoming exhibit at the Fine Art Museum at Western Carolina University.

“Rough and Tumble: Landscapes and Cityscapes” runs through Friday, Aug. 5. The exhibit, comprising pieces in WCU’s permanent collection, features works in a variety of media that depict the natural and unnatural. Artists include Fumio Fujita, Quita Brodhead, Richard Florsheim, Martha Armstrong, Louis Finkelstein and more.

“This exhibit celebrates a dichotomy that we all experience,” said Denise Drury, interim director of WCU’s Fine Art Museum. “One might say you can’t be in two places at once, but you will get a taste of both urban and rural at this exhibition.”

Also on display at the museum is “Boundless: Selections from the Book Arts Collection,” through Friday, June 24. “Boundless” explores a wide variety of formats and structures of the “artist book,” a synthesis of form and content that provides a bridge between the traditional book and contemporary art. This exhibit features a variety of artists, including noted book artists such as Joni Mabe and Dieter Roth as well unique books by photographers, sculptors and painters such as Ed Ruscha. Visitors are encouraged to handle a select grouping of tactile books where a viewer’s actions are required to complete the aesthetic idea.

The Fine Art Museum’s hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. For more information about the Fine Art Museum, contact Drury at (828)227-3591 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
