Annalee Mashburn GreerAnnalee Mashburn Greer

Annalee Mashburn Greer, 89, of Franklin, N.C., died in Virginia Beach, Va., on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Frank Mashburn and Ina Fay Moses Mashburn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard E. Greer; son, Steve Greer; brothers, James, Edward Ray, Samuel and Richard Mashburn and sister, Sue Blackwell. She was a member of Walnut Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Browning of Virginia Beach, Va.; son, Bernie Greer of Charlottesville, Va.; brother, Gilbert Mashburn of Virginia Beach, and four grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Higdonville Baptist Church. Rev. Alton Dendy will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Dr. David Marvin WheelerDr. David Marvin Wheeler

Dr. David Marvin Wheeler, 53, passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, as a result of an auto accident. He was born in Ashland, Ky., the son of Harry M. and Shirley Hay Wheeler of Greenville, S.C. He practiced medicine in the Highlands- Cashiers area for 24 years. He was a graduate of Georgetown College and he received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Wheeler loved boating and watersports. He was a member of Highlands United Methodist Church where he was a former choir member.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mindy Walker Wheeler; his daughter, Sally Ann Wheeler of Highlands, N.C., and his son, Samuel David Wheeler of Highlands; his brother, John F. Wheeler of Greenville, S.C.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 1, at Highlands United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Christy officiating.

Ethylene Stanfield

Ethylene Stanfield, 76, of Franklin, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Harley Stanfield and Esther Holland Stanfield. She was a member of Cullasaja Assembly of God.

She is survived by brothers, Robert Preleau Stanfield, Harley Stanfield Jr. and William L. “Bill” Stanfield all of Franklin and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Monday, Dec. 3, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Alton Dendy officiated. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Emil Varrichio Jr., Johnny Stanfield, Tim Stanfield, Mark Stanfield, Jerry Brown and Lee Boyce.

Charles Thomas McDowellCharles Thomas McDowell

Charles Thomas McDowell, 49, of Otto, N.C., passed away, Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012. Born in Macon County, he was the son of Lucy “Merle” Bradley Adameit and the late Thomas M. McDowell Jr. He was a trainer for the Hanes Textile Company for 21 years and loved golfing and reading. He was of the Methodist faith.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sisters, Linda Brown and husband Tim of Demorest, Ga. and Janice Tyler of Mountain City, Ga.; two brothers, Edward McDowell of Mountain City and Tracy McDowell of Otto; one niece and two nephews. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one nephew.

Funeral services were held, Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Gabe Southard and Rev. Vic Greene officiating. Burial was in Asbury United Methodist Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tracy McDowell, Eddie McDowell, Greg Allen, Jesse Harkins, Roy Quilliams, and Lance Kilby.

Edythe Rose Thane Armstrong Mallory

Edythe Rose Thane Armstrong Mallory, 97, of Franklin, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012.

Born in Manhattan, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Harry Thane Armstrong and Olga Edith Anderson Armstrong. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert John Mallory Sr. She was a member of the Union Homemakers Extension Association. She loved sewing, gardening, antiques and enjoyed reading.

She is survived by her son, Robert John Mallory Jr. of Franklin; daughter, Lyn Wolf and husband Peter of Franklin; sister, Ardelle Baer of Franklin and two grandchildren, Jenya Wolf and Pete Wolf both of Franklin.

No services have been planned at this time.

James Thomas Mann, Sr.James Thomas Mann, Sr.

James Thomas Mann, Sr., 70, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at a local nursing home. He was born in Macon County, N.C. the son of the late Sanford and Ruby Corbin Mann. He was married to Joyce Anderson Mann who passed away in 2007. He was owner of Franklin Sheet Metal and was a member of Junaluska Lodge #145. He was a member of Windy Gap Baptist Church. He loved old cars, trucks, tractors and old engines. He was a loving father and grandfather.

He is survived by two sons, James Thomas Mann, Jr. and his wife, Michelle of Franklin, and Keith Eugene Mann and his wife, Terry of Franklin; mother of his children, Arlene Saunders of Franklin; one sister, Barbara Ledford and her husband, Raymond of Webster, N.C.; three grandchildren, Brandon Mann, Logan Mann and Heaven Conner Mann; special friends, Martha and Elbert McConnell of Franklin. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marshall and Doug Mann.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 1, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Lloyd Fish, Rev. Mark Bishop, Rev. David Brown and Rev. Wiley Gibson officiating.

Nickey Lewis (Nick) CrawfordNickey Lewis (Nick) Crawford

Nickey Lewis (Nick) Crawford, 63, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at the Charles George VA Center in Asheville, N.C. He was born in Macon County, N.C., the son of the late Herbert L. and Marie Shope Crawford. He was a U.S. Marine Veteran serving in Vietnam. He was the owner of Crawford Construction in Franklin. He was a member of the Tessentee Baptist Church. He loved woodworking, hunting, fishing, and being outdoors. He was a loving father and grandfather. He is survived by his better half, Michelle Ledford of Franklin; a daughter, Melissa Gillespie of High Point, N.C.; three sons, Matthew Crawford and wife Heather of Archdale, N.C., Luke Crawford and wife Amy of Franklin, and Brock Crawford and wife Sherry of Otto, N.C.; one step-son, Nicholas Ledford of Franklin; two sisters, Sandra Crawford Ledbetter of Topsail Beach, N.C. and Angel Crawford Christian of High Point, N.C. and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Carpenter and Rev. Doug Carpenter officiating.

Burial and military graveside services were held at the WNC Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, N.C. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Charles George VA Hospital, 1100 Tunnel Rd., Asheville, NC 28805.

Marilyn Frances PotterMarilyn Frances Potter

Marilyn Frances Potter, 54, passed away Nov. 30, 2012, at her home after a protracted illness. She was born in The Hospital, Sidney, N.Y., on July 16, 1958, to Warren and Carron Darling Potter who have resided in the Clark’s Chapel Area of North Carolina since 1999.

She attended the Middleburgh, N.Y., Central School and started her work history in 1969 at the Rainbow Workshop of Schoharie County, N.Y., where she was employed until coming to Clark’s Chapel with her parents in 1999. Since coming to this area she has been employed at Macon County Habilities as a piece worker. She enjoyed performing with the Singing Angels choral group at various churches in the area, as well as the pizza parties they occasionally had at the workshop. Her hobby at home was doing large picture puzzles which she would give as gifts to family or friends after having them framed.

She is survived by her parents, Warren and Carron, and her brother, Kurt B. Potter and a sister, Dawn Potter Hastie along with nephew Andrew, and nieces Faith, and Paige Hastie. She was also predeceased by a brother, Craig V. Potter.

Arrangements were handled by Lander’s Funeral Chapel in Sidney, N.Y. with local assistance of Macon Funeral Home. Disposition will be at the family site in the Gospel Hill/Sunset Cemetery, Guilford, N.Y. No services are planned.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Macon Citizens Habilities (MCH) or Angel Hospice of Macon County.



Debra Ledford HollandDebra Ledford Holland

Debra Ledford Holland, 77, of Naples, Fla., and Franklin, N.C., passed away peacefully on Nov. 28, 2012, at her home in Naples. She was born in Macon County, the daughter of the late Nelson Lewis Ledford and Edna Ledford. She had been a resident of Naples since 1962. She had owned her own real estate companies, Tropical Realty in Naples and Turner River Realty in Everglades City. She was a loving wife, mother and doting grandmother, and loved working crossword puzzles, arts and crafts, camping, traveling, and attending music festivals. She attended the Franklin Church of God.

She will be dearly missed by her loving husband of 53 years, Charles “Chuck” Holland; sons, Jeffrey Holland and wife Samara of Brevard, N.C., and Michael Holland of San Francisco, Calif., and his loving ex-wife Conda Holland of Tampa, Fla.; brother, Buddy Ledford of Andrews, N.C.; four grandchildren, Kristen Harper, Wesley Holland, Ryan Holland and Delaney Holland; two great-grandchildren, Micah Harper and Lily Harper. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Don Moffitt officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dustin McDonald, Devin Holland, Ryan Holland, Matt Harper, John Pennington, and Aaron Holland.

Eldon PottsEldon Potts

Eldon Potts, 78, of Franklin, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012.

Born in Jackson County, he was the son of the late Ernest Potts and Hazel Fox Potts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Carl Potts and sister, Gertrude Hooper. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during the Korean conflict. He drove a Sealtest milk truck for 19 years. He retired as director for Macon County EMS. He was a Christmas tree farmer for more than 30 years and was Assistant Scout Master and Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 221 for many years. He also led three expeditions to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He was a member of Sugarfork Baptist Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Hattie Mae Wiggins Potts; son, Rick Potts and wife Christy of Cashiers, N.C.; two grandchildren, Faith and Tucker Potts; two sisters, Bobbie Coward and husband Dale of the Norton Community and Juanita Dilbeck of Titusville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Friday, Nov. 30, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Eddie Stillwell and Rev. Billy Keith officiated. Burial was in the Evitt Cemetery with full military rites conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108.

Pallbearers were Doyle Woods, Terry Bates, Bruce Wooten, Randy Rogers, Warren Henry and Ricky Phillips.

Baby Blankenship-Cousins, infant child of Sarah Louise Blankenship and Trey Henry Cousins, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012.

In addition to the parents, the baby is survived by a brother, Lyric Blankenship of Franklin; maternal grandparents, Lane Blankenship of Nevada, Joy Blankenship, Fred Greeninger, and Howard Fry all of Oregon; and a number of aunts and uncles.

Evelyn Suttle West, 89, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012. Born in Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Peter Raymond and Mattie Mae Surber Suttle. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, the Adult Sunday School Class and UMW. She was a member of the Nequassa Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and a member of Little Bridge Club.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Jesse L. West Jr.; a son, Jesse Lyle West III and wife Charlene of Asheville, N.C.; six grandchildren, Alicia Reed, Jerry Lee Patton, Jr., Stephen Yonce, Mary Elizabeth Yonce; Jesse Lyle West IV (Jay) and Jeffrey West and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Evelyn Patton and Patricia Cabe and a granddaughter, Rebecca Lynn Patton.

Memorial services were held Friday, Nov. 30, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. David Beam officiating.
