William Carl AlexanderWilliam Carl Alexander

William Carl Alexander, 63, a native of Macon County, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013. He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Delonius Alexander.

He graduated from Franklin High School in 1967. He served in the United States Army from 1969-1974 and served with the military police in the Vietnam War. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Science from Western Carolina University in 1974. He held several manufacturing positions in the Carolinas and Alabama and returned to Franklin, N.C., in 1994. Here, he started two local businesses, Otto Trucking and Tarheel Water Treatment, and was an active member of the Hickory Knoll United Methodist Church.

He was a loving and dedicated son. He was well-known for his impressive physical strength, passion for farming and entrepreneurial spirit. He will be missed.

He is survived by his mother, Lula Alexander Kloss, of Franklin; his son, Eric Carl Alexander, of Union, S.C.; his brothers, Robert James Alexander, and wife Joyce, of Sunset, S.C. and Richard Cecil Alexander, and wife Janfra, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and his sister, Frances Alexander Killian of Asheville, N.C.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 18, at Macon Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Randall Dills, Alvin Doster, Mike Mc- Clure, Patrick Rathbone, Gary Gibson and Warren Wiley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hickory Knoll United Methodist Church, 86 East Hickory Knoll Road, Franklin, NC 28734.

Doris Jean ResceDoris Jean Resce

Doris Jean “Jeannie” Resce died Thursday, Feb. 14, peacefully at her home in Highlands. She was born June 2, 1920, in Society Hill, S.C., the youngest of seven children. While going to school in Charleston, S.C., she met her first husband Norman Mosely and they moved to Coral Gables, Fla., where she lived for many years. She was predeceased by Norman and later married Walter (Butch) Resce and began to divide her time between Highlands and Florida. While in Highlands she was a member of Wildcat Cliffs Country Club where she loved to play golf. She was also a long time member of The Church of The Incarnation serving on the Flower Guild, Altar Guild and as a past vestry member. She also spent many hours painting and doing needle point.

She is survived by her son, Norman Mosely, Jr (Suzy) of Highlands and a daughter, Jean Mosely of Houston, Texas; two granddaughters, Janet Latham (Dr. Bryan) of Elon, N.C. and Lisa Durham (Todd) of Denver, Colo.; three great grandchildren, Christopher Latham, Alexis Durham and Lindsey Durham, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 19, at The Church of The Incarnation of Highlands with Father Bruce Walker officiating. Burial was in Highlands Memorial Park.

Gary Winston Whittle, 63, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013. Born in Hillsborough County, Florida, he was the son of the late Winston Cecil Whittle and Dorothy Evelyn Henry Hazlett.

He was a surveyor and a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Callie Lynch and husband Joel of Franklin; brother, Glen Whittle and wife Tina of Mills River, N.C.; sister, Gayle Whittle of Tampa, Fla.; and, grandson, Abram Joel Lynch.

No services are planned at this time.

James Monroe JonesJames Monroe Jones

James Monroe Jones, 78, of Otto, N.C., passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013. He was born in Transylvania County, N.C., the son of the late Clyde and Dellia Golden Jones. He was married to the late Cleo Vinson Jones. He was a textile worker and was an avid gardener.

He is survived by two sons, Travis Monroe Jones and Terry Lee Jones both of Otto; three sisters, Thelma Hawkins of Arden, N.C,. Peggy Fisher of Lake Toxaway, N.C., and Shirley Gonce of Horseshoe, N.C. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Jane McFee and Martha Galloway and a brother, William Julius Jones.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

John Carroll Moore, 78, of Franklin, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013.

Born in Arlington, Va., he was the son of the late Christopher Henry Moore and Veronica Mc- Dermott Moore. John was a U.S. Marine and served as Chaplain for the Marine Corps League. He worked in the Pentagon, loved to golf and was a great story teller. He was a member of Life Church of Franklin.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Linnie Lynnette Moore of Franklin; eight children, Noelle Oblander and husband Tim of Asheville, Patrick Moore and wife Laurel of Orlando, Fla., Elizabeth Raymond of Franklin, Michael Wood and wife Dana of Franklin, Benjamin Wood of Pahokee, Fla., Ryan Moore and wife Missy of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Julie Reynolds and husband Jim of Wellington, Fla. and Lorrie Moore of Navarre, Fla.; brother, Bob Moore of Williamsburg, Va.; sister, Christine Courtright of Chapel Hill, N.C. and 16 grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Life Church of Franklin. Pastor Patrick Moore and Pastor Chris Hughes will officiated.

Katie Marie Crisp Green, 78, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Iva Crisp and Della V. Bryson Crisp. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Green and 11 brothers and sisters, Fred, Furman, J.L, Lawrence, J.W, Homer, Gaither, Iva Jean Dills, Elizabeth Clark and Virginia and Anita Crisp. She enjoyed gardening, canning, crocheting and cooking for her family. She was a member of Windy Gap Baptist Church.

She is survived by two brothers, William “Bill” Crisp and wife Lynne of Franklin and Charles Crisp and wife Rada of Beattyville, Ky.; sister, Frankie L. Sanders and husband Dallas of Franklin and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Friday, Feb. 15, at Windy Gap Baptist Church. Rev. Mark Bishop, Rev. Gary McCoy and Rev. Michael McConnell officiated. Burial was in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Charlie Sanders, Dallas Crisp, Darrin Crisp, Ken Crisp, Terry Crisp, Dewayne Ervin, Mark Cook and Johnny Crisp.

Edith CrunkletonEdith Crunkleton

Edith Crunkleton, 91, of Dillard, Ga., died Monday Feb. 11, 2013, at Angel Medical Center in Franklin, N.C.

She was born July 3, 1921, in Macon County, but lived in Rabun Gap and Dillard for more than 60 years. She was a member of Dillard United Methodist Church and was a loving mother who devoted her life to raising her children after the death of her husband.

She was preceded in death by her husband, P.A. and infant daughter, Donna. Survivors include daughter Katherine Allison and husband Mike of Dillard, daughter Barbara Mullinax and husband Randy of Gainesville, daughter Susan of Dillard and son David and his wife Kim of Otto, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Pauline Crunkleton; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the Beck Funeral Home Chapel. Her grandchildren served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorial donations in her name may be made to a charity of your choice.

Wenona Sylvian Sherman

Wenona Sylvian Sherman, 86, of Franklin, NC, passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013.

Born in Bee Springs, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Sheldon Cedar Merritt and Nannie G. Gibson Merritt. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Carl Lynwood Sherman Sr.; two sons, Carl Lynwood Sherman Jr. and Richard Henry Sherman; grandson, Ronald Steven Sherman Jr; great-grandson, Nathan “Skeet” Moore and a brother, Sheldon Cedar Merritt Jr. She worked at Canal Point Elementary School in the cafeteria. She also worked at the Stop & Shop in Canal Point, Fla. and was co-owner of Port Mayaca Trading Post with her husband from 1966-1993. She was a member of Canal Point United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son, Ronald Sherman Sr. of Otto, N.C.; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

June Elizabeth Zelasko, 87, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013.

Born in Morgan, N.J., she was the daughter of the late William Anthony Morgan and Katherine Paris Morgan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Zelasko. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and participated in the St. Francis craft group and women’s guild.

She is survived by two children, Janice Brucher and husband Dick of Franklin and Linda Oquinn and husband Tom of Deland, Fla.; six grandchildren, Scott Oquinn and wife Jamie of Lake City, Fla., Kristy Harwood and husband Tom of Gainesville, Fla., Brent Oquinn and wife Erin of Ormond Beach, Fla., Chad Stone and wife Angie of Franklin, Tonia Curl and husband Travis of Katy, Texas and Kelly Cunningham of Franklin and 15 greatgrandchildren.

Funeral mass was held Monday, Feb. 18, at St. Francis Catholic Church. Father Tien Duong officiated.

Martha Louise Talley Reese, 83, of Highlands, N.C., passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at a local hospital. She was a native of Macon County; the daughter of the late Marcus Leonard and Charlotte Keener Talley. She was married to the late Wayne Allen Reese who passed away in 2005. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Highlands.

She is survived by two daughters, Wanda Wright of Highlands, and Sherry Reese of Franklin, N.C.; two sons, Dennis Reese of Arden, N.C., and Allen Reese of Highlands; four sisters, Sarah Davis of Otto, N.C., Eva Marshall of Mt. Kisco, N.Y., Berta Lee Darci of Flippin, Ark. and Beatrice Ruhl of Havelock, N.C.; two brothers Charles Talley of Elkins, N.C. and Clifford Talley of Highlands; seven grandchildren, Robbie, Darin, Bradley, Shannon, Trent, Stacy and Danae, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gordon and Lewis Talley.

The services were held Monday, Feb. 18, at First Baptist Church of Highlands with Dr. Mark Ford and Rev. Jim Kinard officiating. Pallbearers were Mike Keener, Wymer Bryson, James Ramey, Buddy Kremser, R. L. Wilson and Bill Reese.

Dorothy Mildred Sim, 83, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013.

Born in Detroit, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Russell Thomas Burgess and Lysle Ella Wilkes Burgess. He was a very active member of Coweeta Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, John Ernest Sim of Franklin; four children, David Russell Sim of Greenville, S.C., Robert Matthew Sim of Murphy, John Joseph Sim of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and Cheryl Ann Scullin of Columbus, Ohio; sister, Ella Heron of Royal Oak, Mich.; brother, Russell Thomas Burgess of Novi, Mich.; three grandchildren, Conner Christian Sim of Franklin, Andrew Sim of Charleston, S.C. and Laura Phelan of Columbus, Ohio and four great-grandchildren, Caiden, Ryan, Bella and Josie Phelan all of Columbus, Ohio.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, February 24 at Coweeta Baptist Church. Rev. Davis Hooper will officiate.
