Lester Neville Norton

Lester Neville Norton, 86, of Odenville, Ala., formerly of Franklin, N.C., died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Virgil Lester and Mary Parker Norton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II in the Pacific Theatre aboard USS Taconic.

He was a retired salesman for Martha White Company; was a song writer and loved music. He was a very faithful Christian and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Margaret, Ala.

He is survived by one daughter, Teri Feaser and husband Cory of Flippin, Ark.; three grandchildren, Ashley Jones, Trevor Trout and Kaelan Davis and two great-grandchildren, Kelsey Jones and Charlotte Chapman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Paschal, Parker and John Norton.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Dryman officiating. Burial was in Newman Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. Masonic graveside rites were performed by Junaluska Masonic Lodge #145. Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post #108 performed military graveside rites.

James Youel ‘Jim’ CabeJames Youel ‘Jim’ Cabe

James Youel “Jim” Cabe, 68, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at his home on Middle Creek, Otto, N.C. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Herschel Milo and Eula George Burrell Cabe. Following a successful law career spanning 39 years, he retired in 2009. After that, he spent many happy days with his family, friends, his dogs, puttering in the garden, and keeping the wood fire stoked. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Kaye Young Cabe; his daughter, Kimberly Cabe Smith, and husband, David Smith, of Hendersonville, N.C.; his son, Jeremy Cabe, of Franklin, N.C.; one brother, David Lawson Cabe, and wife, Katie Cabe, of Otto; and one sister, Myrtis Dillard, and husband, Edward Dillard, of Dillard, Ga.; four beloved grandchildren, Zack and Emma Smith, and Parker and Brennan Cabe, and a host of dear and devoted friends.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, March 3, at the home, with his friend, Allen Willis, officiating. Flowers are appreciated, but memorial donations may be made to Angel Hospice, 170 Church Street, Franklin, North Carolina 28734.

Milly Gyger Epsen

Milly Gyger Epsen, 89, of Franklin, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013.

Born in Will, Switzerland, she was the daughter of the late Gottlieb Gyger and Milly Engeler Gyger.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert F. Epsen and a sister. Milly owned and operated a florist shop in Burlingame, Calif., for 20 years. She has lived in Franklin since 2000.

She is survived by three step-children, Robert W. Epsen, Robert A. Epsen and Katherine Millhiser.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Jessie Jane WilsonJessie Jane Wilson

Jessie Jane Wilson, 83, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, March 1, 2013. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late J. Frank Wilson and Elva Solesbee Wilson. She was the manager of the Cowee School cafeteria for several years and also retired from Caterpillar where she worked as a machine operator until the age of 75. She was a member of Cowee Baptist Church and she liked gardening, traveling and was a big Elvis fan.

She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Owenby and companion Jack Hendrixson of Franklin; and one son, Mitchell Owenby and wife Gloria of Franklin; two brothers, James Arnold Wilson of Andrews, N.C. and Ray Newman Wilson and wife Bobbie of Andrews; three grandchildren, Stacey Owenby, Stephanie Reese and husband Jason, Jason Simpson and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 4, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. David Powell and Rev. John Raby officiating. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ron Wilson, Jamie Wilson, Gray Wilson, Mike Breedlove, Joe Breedlove and David Morgan.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Cowee Baptist Church at 6301 Bryson City Rd. Franklin, NC 28734.

David Eric Engelking

David Eric Engelking, 46, of Otto, N.C., passed away Monday, Feb. 25, 2013. He was born in Palm Beach, Fla., the son of Edward Chuck Engelking and Diane Dolores Schuler Barkman and his step-father Carl A. Barkman. He worked in construction as a painter. He was very artistic; he enjoyed painting, outdoors, flowers and vegetable gardening, fruit trees, canoeing, and four wheeling all with his children. He attended St. Francis Catholic Church.

In addition to his parents and step-father, he is survived by three daughters, Jade Engelking and Tiffany Engelking both of Massachusetts and Erica Engelking of Franklin, N.C.; one son, Elliott Engelking of Franklin; a brother, Darren Engelking of Otto.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 2, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Davis Hooper officiating.

Arlene Rae DuhlArlene Rae Duhl

Arlene Rae Duhl, 76, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at a Highlands- Cashiers Hospital. She was born in Montgomery County, Ohio, the daughter of the late Herbert and Ruth Kelly Grice. She was a medical secretary, ER secretary and she worked as an operating room tech at Good Samaritain Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. She loved painting, reading, bingo and working with flowers.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Walter Duhl; her daughter, Marianne Olson and husband, Victor of Tripp, S.D. and her son, David Duhl Sr. and his wife Wilma Lynn of Franklin; four grandchildren, Samantha Scheuerman, David Duhl Jr., Danielle VanPelt and Dustin Duhl; four great-grandchildren, Jonathan VanPelt, Ashton Duhl, Cheyenne Duhl and Alex Duhl.

David Lee DillardDavid Lee Dillard

David Lee Dillard, 68, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, March 3, 2013, at a local hospital. He was born in Jackson County, N.C. the son of Nellie Franks Dillard of Sylva, N.C. and the late Charlie Dillard. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired teacher for the Macon County Schools and was a member of the Cowee Baptist Church where he served on the building committee. He was a strong family man, loved all sports and was a cabinet maker and builder. He was on the board of directors for the Macon County Fair and was a founder member of the Cowee Fire & Rescue.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Claudette Leatherman Dillard; two daughters, Pamela Shepherd and her husband, Mike and Sherry Williamson and her husband, Dustin all of Franklin; two step-daughters, Karen Smith and her husband, John of Franklin, and Melody Holeman and her husband Delwin of Athens, Ga.; one sister, Annie Estes and husband, Charles of Sylva; two brothers, Earl Dillard and his wife, Shirley of Franklin, and Eugene Dillard and his wife Mary of Sylva; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Dillard.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 5, at Cowee Baptist Church with Rev. David Powell, Rev. Eddie Stillwell and Rev. Jason Smith officiating. Burial was at Cowee Baptist Church Cemetery. Ted Kirkland, Mike Vanhook, Bill Fouts, Terry Cabe, Tony Shuler and Vern Davis served as pallbearers. Cowee Fire and Rescue served as honorary pallbearers. The Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post #108 performed full military graveside rites.

Xuan Hong CangXuan Hong Cang

Xuan Hong Cang, 90, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, March 3, 2013.

Born in China, she was the daughter of the late Sung Ha Cang and Au Lao. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Heng Han Phuong; one brother and one sister. She loved watching old Chinese movies and the opera. She was Buddhist by faith.

She is survived by 10 children, Han Than Phuong of Clayton, Ga., Han Van Phuong of Sydney, Australia, Hanory Phuong of Fort Payne, Ala., Chuoi Phuong of Franklin, Cheang Bou Phuong of Sylva, N.C., Nancy Phuong of Franklin, Xeng Mui Phuong of Annadale, Va., Jannie Phuong of Falls Church, Va., Ken Phuong of Franklin and Michelle Xung Phuong of Franklin; sister, Huong Lan Cang of Philadelphia, Pa.; 30 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

Funeral service will be held at 7 a.m. Saturday, March 9, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 8, from 3 to 10 p.m. at Macon Funeral Home.

Louise MasonLouise Greenwood Mason

Louise Greenwood Mason, 85, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Albert Greenwood and Hattie Jones Greenwood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stover Mason and daughter, Judy Sheridan. She loved to garden and was a member of Franklin Church of God.

She is survived by her son, Tommy Greenwood of Franklin; three brothers, John Greenwood of Franklin and Charles and Frank Greenwood both of Longview, Wash.; sister, Nancy Stiwinter of Franklin; three grandchildren, Monica Kidd, Tisha Marie Hopkins and Jacqueline Goss; four great-grandchildren, Mason, Tanner, Bryson and Ethan and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Monday, March 4, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Robert Dryman and Rev. Thurman Jenkins officiated. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Pallbearers were James Greenwood, James Burch, Ronnie Stiwinter, Joseph Hopkins, Jeb Ballard and Josh Stiwinter.
