Dale Davis ScottDale Davis Scott

Dale Davis Scott, 62, of Bryson City, N.C., and Franklin, N.C., went to be with the Lord Sunday, June 23, 2013, at Swain County Hospital. He was born in Macon County, N.C., the son of the late Wiley and Louise Shuler Scott. He was a self-employed painter by trade. He was a loving and devoted husband and father.

He is survived by his wife of four years, Barbara Ann Cook Scott; one daughter, Angela Scott McLean and husband Greg of Franklin; three sisters, Annie Rae Angel and husband Homer and Joyce Hoark and husband Larry of Franklin, and Ruby Earls and husband Al of Macon, Ga.; one brother, Zeb Scott and wife Dorothy of Franklin; and two grandchildren, Jessica and Makayla of Franklin.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 26, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Cogdill and Rev. Bennie Haire officiating. Burial was held at Watauga Baptist Church Cemetery. Gary Scott, Dennis Scott, Ricky Scott, Timothy McClure, Mark McClure and Mike Johnson served as pallbearers. Mike Stamey, Gregg Earls, Ricky Earls and Jeremy Stepp served as honorary pallbearers.

Jean Ward

Jean Ward was born Dec. 23, 1941, in Louisville, Ky. She grew up in Atlanta, Ga., and spent her teenage summers in Cashiers teaching horseback riding.

In 1975, she returned and enrolled in an EMT class at the Glenville Rescue Squad where she met Charles Ward. They were married in October 1976. She was the first woman to join a rescue squad in Western North Carolina as an EMT.

In 1978, she started Home and Land Maintenance, Cashiers Carpet Cleaners, Cashiers Garage Door and Western Carolina Restoration. In November 1988, she was listed in The Cleaning and Restoration, the official RIA Publication International as one of six ladies of the ’80s in the cleaning industry.

She loved her dogs. She operated Cashiers K9 Camp where she boarded dogs for a number of years. She worked 11 years as a tech for the Cashiers Village Vet.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Leonard Long and Florence Major Long; two sons, Shawn Goodwin and Todd Goodwin, and a daughter, Jeanne Caruthers.

She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Charles Ward; Charlene Ward and Jay Webster of Cashiers, Jodi Bayes and Brad Bayes of Orange Park, Fla., and Dawn Woodring; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and one brother, Major Long of Cashiers.

She was a member of Cashiers United Methodist Church; she helped organize the Cashiers Chamber of Commerce, and along with Jackie Wynn organized the Cashiers Christmas Parade for several years.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 29, at 2 p.m. at Cashiers United Methodist Church with Rev. Randy Harry officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2 pm, one hour prior to the service, at the church.

Sterling Odell Peek

Sterling Odell Peek, 73, of Franklin, N.C., passed away on Monday, June 24, 2013.

Born in Macon County, N.C., he was the son of the late Bulen Neil Peek and Nellie Hedden Peek. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Morley and Grendall Peek. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He enjoyed gardening, golfing and attended Liberty Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Glenda Sheffield Peek; two daughters, Sherry Peek of Asheville, and Deborah Peek of Franklin; son, Randy Peek and wife Karen of Princeton, W.Va.; brothers, Harold Peek of Middleburg, Fla., LeRoy and Doug Peek both of Franklin; sisters, Maxine Shepherd of Candler, N.C., Christine Parrish of Franklin and Doris Crane of Fla.; three grandsons, Justin Reed and wife Emily, Austin Peek and Bryce Peek; greatgrandson, Colton Reed; many nieces and nephews and several special brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, June 26, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Clark Sheffield, Wayne Sheffield, Rick Potts and Judson Hall officiated. Burial was in Snow Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery with military rites conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108.

Pallbearers were Court Reece, Justin Reed, Austin Peek, Bryce Peek, Gary Peek and Terry Sheffield. Honorary Pallbearers were Ralph Hall, Hayes Snyder and Barry Hannah.

Hetty HolbrooksHetty Josephine Welch Holbrooks

Hetty Josephine Welch Holbrooks, 89, of the Burningtown Community, Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, June 24, 2013, at a local nursing home. She was a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late Oscar and Lillie Daves Welch. She was married to the late John Terrell (Jack) Holbrooks Jr.. She was a homemaker and worked as an LPN at Grandview Manor and Angel Hospital. She was a member of Burningtown Baptist Church and loved music and singing. She loved her family; they were her whole life.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Lou Moses and her husband, Ed of Franklin, and a son, Homer V. Holbrooks and his wife Teresa of Franklin; a sister, Dixie Welch Bates; two brothers, Charles Welch and his wife, Jewel and Arlfe Welch all of Franklin; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by a baby son, a sister, Betty Jane Welch Merrith and four brothers, Virgil, Bobby, J.D. and Johnny Welch.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 28, at 2 p.m. at Burningtown Baptist Church with Rev, Randy Drinnon officiating. Burial will be in Burningtown Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brent Holbrooks, Tracy Chastain, Ed Moses, Jr., George Jenkins, Rusty Stewman, Eddie Moses, III, Trey Chastain, and Wayne Jenkins.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

Luther Gillis MacKinnon III

Luther Gillis MacKinnon III, 76, Glenville, N.C., died Sunday, June 16, 2013. Born Greenville, Ala., son of Luther Gillis and Eleanor Lee Norris MacKinnon, he was an architect AIA.

He is survived by his wife, Brooke Hamilton MacKinnon; children, Mary Katherine MacKinnon of Chico, Calif., Virginia Lee MacKinnon and Luther Gillis MacKinnon, IV, both of Ft. Collins, Colo., and William Hunter Cressall, of Birmingham, Ala.; brother, Norris MacKinnon, Richmond, Ky. and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 11, at 2 p.m., Church of the Good Shepherd, Cashiers, N.C. with Revs. Virginia Monroe and Toby Summerour officiating. Reception following service at Hines Hall.

Faye AldermanFaye Alderman

Faye Alderman, 91, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, June 21, 2013. Born in Cook Co., Ill., she was the daughter of the late Joe B. and Bessie Irene Duncan Roberts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jonah Raymond Alderman. She was a homemaker and LPN. She attended Trinity Assembly of God Church.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorthea Irene Alderman; two sisters and one brother.

She is survived by four daughters, Linda Faye Anders and husband Richard of Otto, N.C., Betty Jo Griffin and husband Brian of Ocala, Fla., Norma Louise Alderman and fiancee’ William Frantz of Franklin, and Kathleen Hartley and husband Alton of Atlanta, Ga.; 15 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and five great-greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 28, at 2 p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Ocala, Fla. with the Rev. Dennis Hamill officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Ocala following the service.

Gerald ‘Jerry’ Lee Kolle

Gerald "Jerry" Lee Kolle, 81, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, June 22, 2013. He was born in Vanderburg County, Ind., the son of the late Raymond and Ruby Barnard Kolle.

He was retired from the U.S. Air Force, having served during the Korean War and Vietnam War. He was married first to Margaret Callis Kolle, who died in 1988, and is survived by his second wife, Marilyn Higgins Kolle.

He was a member of the Air Force Association; a member of Franklin Gem Society, and a survivor of Chosin Frozen in Korea. He loved gardening, woodworking and gem cutting.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Ruth Witsberger of Plato, Mo., Naomi Kolle of Franklin, and Cindy Hand of Princeton, Ill.; four step-sons, James Gray of Tampa, Fla., Robert Gray of Orlando, Fla., Charles Gray of Louisville, Ky. and William Gray of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Elaine McGraw of Dallas, Texas, and a brother, Logan Kolle of Fordsville, Ky.; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by a son Gerald "Gary" Kolle Jr and a sister, Norma Jean Kost.

Memorial services will be held July 1, at 2 p.m., in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Vic Greene officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service.
