Bernice Mozelle Moffitt

Bernice Mozelle Moffitt, 82, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, July 22, 2013.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Jake Watts and Allie Ledford Watts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin Moffitt, who died in 2006; daughter, Connie Bateman; and five brothers and sisters, Helen Dills, Bell Jacobs, Hazel Conley, Glenn Watts and James Watts. She enjoyed sewing, crafts and gardening. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

She is survived by two children, Keith Moffitt and wife Melissa and Cathie Sprinkle and husband Bill all of Franklin; two grandsons, Jeremy Sprinkle and Jonathan Sprinkle and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, July 23, at Woodlawn Cemetery. Rev. Kim Justice officiated.

Mildred J. BurnetteMildred J. Burnette

Mildred J. Burnette, 80, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, July 20, 2013. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Everett and Bertha Bryant Cook. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Clyde Burnette who died in 1994. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She liked gardening, flowers and quilting.

She is survived by three daughters, Deborah Flores and husband Juan of Clarkston, Mich., Connie Klapko and husband Gregg of Flint, Mich. and Michelle Lane and husband Dale of Franklin; one son, Douglas Burnette and wife Yvonne of Flint, Mich.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a long time companion Billy Ray McAllister.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 24, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Lindsay officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Justin Law, Dale Lane, Josh Chastain, Gene Estes, Dickie Phillips and Kenneth McCaskill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rose Creek Baptist Church, 80 Blue Ridge Dr., Franklin, NC 28734.

George J. Kapec

George J. Kapec, 92, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, July 19, 2013.

Born in Nanticoke, Pa., he was the son of the late George Kapec and Anna Merva Kapec. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Kapec, who died in 2006; a brother, John Hauduck; and a sister, Anna McCrory. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during WWII. He was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church in Hallandale, Fla.

He is survived by two daughters, Linda Lampkin and husband Rufus of Franklin and Barbara Pettesch and husband Paul of Chesterfield, Va.; two brothers, Joe Kapec of Florida and Andy Kapec of Stafford, Va.; sister, Irene Yenshaw of Bethlehem, Pa.; two grandchildren, Adam and George Pettesch and several nieces and nephews.

No local services will be held.

Velma CurtisVelma Curtis

Velma Curtis, 92, of Hayesville died Thursday, July 18, 2013, in Clay County Care Center. She was a native of Macon County, N.C., but had lived in Atlanta before moving to Hayesville in 1979. She was a homemaker and a member of the Hayesville Church of God.

She was the daughter of the late Phillip and Margaret McClure Russell and the wife of the late Mark W. Curtis, who died Feb. 19, 2012.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Jean Green and husband, Terry of Morganton, Ga.; a son, Bobby Gene Curtis and wife, Helen of Blairsville, Ga.; two grandchildren, Heath and Ray Bennett; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 21, in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville, with the Rev. Mitchell Totherow officiating. Interment was in the Hayesville First United Methodist Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ray Bennett, Stan Martin, Verlin and Denver Ledford, Bill Berrong, and Ken Rowland.

The family requests memorials be made in memory of Velma Curtis to the Hayesville First United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, PO Box 85, Hayesville, NC 28904.

Raymond A. Teska

Raymond A. Teska, 87, of Otto, N.C., passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisc., he was the son of the late Walter J. Teska and Hattie Janowiak Teska. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during WWII. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 8363; a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and enjoyed woodworking.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elaine D. Teska; four children, Kevin J. Teska and wife Marguerite of Leesburg, Va., Dr. Jeffrey Teska and wife Kimberly of Charles Town, W.Va., Dr. Lyle R. Teska of Plano, Texas and Yvonne J. Davidoff and husband Donald of Littleton, Colo.; two brothers, Bernard Teska of Greendale, Wisc. and Robert Teska of Greenfield, Wisc. and five grandchildren, Amanda Grove, Wallace and Logan Teska and Erika and Daria Davidoff.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 26, at St. Francis Catholic Church. Father Tien Duong will officiate with military rites conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108.

Willene Stanfield

Willene StanfieldWillene Stanfield, 78, of Franklin, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2013.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Moses and Pearl Woods Moses. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Stanfield and two sisters, Peggy Carpenter and Claudette McCall. She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by three children, Nancy Rathbone and husband Charlie of Canton, N.C., Debbie Brown and husband Jim of Franklin and Tommy Stanfield of Franklin; sister, Patsy Raby of Franklin; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Friday, July 19, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Jim Dusek, Rev. Vic Greene and Larry Raby officiated. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Steve Raby, Randy McCall, John Henry, Bobby Henry, Chris Berry and Craig Berry.

Henry Lee Powell Jr.

Henry Lee Powell Jr., 81, of Franklin, N.C., passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2013.

Born in Stone Mountain, Ga., he was the son of the late Henry Lee Powell Sr. and Marjorie L. Pittman Powell Warren. He was a retired building contractor in the Atlanta area.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Callahan Powell; son, Rick Powell of Lawrenceville, Ga.; stepson, Daniel Cash and wife Jennifer of Grayson, Ga. and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 28, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Albert Grey will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
