Phillip ChapmanPhillip Chapman

Phillip Chapman, 63, passed away on Aug. 27, 2013, at his home. He was born in Nichols County, W.Va., the son of the late Henry Russell Chapman and Leah Opal Radar. He worked for Austin Powder for a number of years. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Glenda Mary Chapman; three daughters, Marsa Chapman, and husband Brandon, Heather Chapman, and Carrie Chapman Lewis, and husband Lou all of Craigsville, W.Va.; one son, Brian Chapman, of Rupert, W.Va.; two sisters, Rose Mary Chapman Long of Indiana and Norma Salmons of Elkin, W.Va.; two brothers, John Chapman and wife Helen of Summersville, W.Va. and Mike Chapman of Arizona; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rita Crow Chapman and brothers, Gerald Chapman and Roger Chapman.

Memorial services were held Saturday, Aug. 31, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

Alva WoodringAlva Jewell Bentley Woodring

Alva Jewell Bentley Woodring, 81, went to be with the Lord on Friday Aug. 30, 2013. A native and lifelong resident of Glenville, N.C. She loved living in the mountains and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening. She was a member of Hamburg Baptist Church and lived her mountain values. She had a deep love for family and was known by her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren as "Nanny." She was the wife of the late Charles Thomas Woodring and daughter of the late Frank and Myrtle Bentley. She was preceded in death by two infant sons and a daughter, Vieta Jamison, brothers, Edwin, Marvin and Cecil Bentley.

She is survived by sisters, Ada Moss, Kathleen Franks and Sue Smith; children, Vera Smith and husband Ronnie of Candler N.C., Sharon Houston and husband Steve and Eldon Jamison, son-inlaw, all of Yellow Mountain, N.C.; six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the Hamburg Baptist church with Revs. Johnny Norris and Keith Ashe officiating. Pallbearers were Kevin Smith, Brad Blanton, Gary Williams, Sherman Moss, Victor Moss and David Bentley. Burial followed in the Hamburg Baptist church cemetery.

Jane H. LeBus

Jane H. LeBus, 88, of Highlands, N.C. passed away Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013. Born in Maysville, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Frank Leslie and Maude Berry Hendrickson. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Reynolds LeBus who died in 2001.

She is survived by two sons, Lewis Baldwin Flynn III of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Kyle Hendrickson Flynn and his wife Ann of Boca Grande, Fla.; one step-son, John Reynolds LeBus of Mesa, Ariz.; four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a stepson, Lewis Martin LeBus III.

Memorial donations may be made to Highlands-Cashiers Hospital, 190 Hospital Drive, Highlands, NC 28741 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Steven Chad AsbySteven Chad Asby

Steven Chad Asby, 56, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013.

Born in Tokorozawa, Japan, he was the son of Bucky Asby and Mildred Lillard Asby. He was self-employed in small motor engine repairs. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 25 years, Melba Richards Asby; two children, Steven Asby and wife Lauren of Greenville, N.C. and Jennifer Asby of Aden, N.C.; four step-children, Diana Peavy of Franklin, Debra Hubbard and husband Shad of Cleveland, Tenn., Steven Watts of Tallahassee, Fla. and Cindy Watts of Franklin; brother, Scott Lillard Asby of Franklin; four grandchildren and 11 step-grandchildren.

Graveside service was held Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Steve Reeves and Dr. Jeff Hensley officiated.

Grace Ledford Ensley

Grace Ledford Ensley, 82, passed away Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, unexpectedly. A native of Franklin, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Oscar Ledford and Lexie Farmer Ledford and lived most of her life in Sylva, N.C.

She was involved with the family snack business, Weston Ensley Snax's for many years. She was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents and brothers and sisters, she is preceded in death by her husband, Weston Oliver Ensley.

She is survived by her children, Kirby Grant Ensley of Sylva; a daughter, Cher Ensley of Florida; a granddaughter, Virna Lisa Stambaugh and husband James of Raccoon, Ky.; a great grandson, Jessie James Coleman, his step-sister Shellie, also of Kentucky; special sisters-in-law and close friends and numerous very much loved nieces and nephews.

A graveside service at Old Field Cemetery celebrating her life will be scheduled at a later date.

Arrangements are in the care of Melton Funeral Home, Sylva.



Vincent N. Barbro

Vincent N. Barbro, 79, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013.

Born in Schenectady, N.Y., he was the son of the late Anthony Barbro and Loretta Cantor Barbro. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Anthony and Donald Barbro. He was a U.S. Air National Guard veteran. He enjoyed volunteering at CareNet. He sang with Men Macon Music and was a very active member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Barbro; son, Russell Barbro of Franklin; two daughters, Cynthia Lady of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Donna Barbro of Merritt Island, Fla.; two grandchildren, Jason and Kristin Lady; sister-in-law, Helen Barbro; nephew, Donald Barbro and niece, Daryl Bologna.

No services have been planned at this time.

Herbert John AsheHerbert John Ashe

Herbert John Ashe, 91, of Highlands, N.C., passed away on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Fidelia Eckerd Living Center in Highlands. He was born on April 30, 1922 in Harlem, N.Y., to parents, Michael and Martha Carroll Ashe. He was the oldest of three siblings, the late Carroll Ashe McIver, and Donald Ashe.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of more than 50 years, Gloria, his son, Tim, and his second wife of 10 years, Enid Hess Ashe. He grew up in the Atacama Desert in Chile where he became fluent in Spanish, and attended high school in Buenos Aires, Argentina where he met Enid. He was a World War II Navy pilot and flew PBY’s off the coast of South America. While training at the Pensacola Naval Air Station, he met and married Gloria Mc- Cluskey Ashe. They had four children together, Michael, Mary Ellen, Herbert Jr. and Timothy. He was a proud alumnus of Colorado School of Mines where he graduated with a degree in Mining Engineering. He worked for Bethlehem Steel for most of his career, which had him living in Venezuela, various parts of Mexico, Bethlehem, Pa., and Wheeling, W.Va. He moved to Florida after his retirement and split his time between Highlands and Florida for the last 17 years. He was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in Highlands. He enjoyed life to the fullest. Two of his greatest pleasures in life were a fine whiskey and a bowl of ice cream. He never met a stranger and was always ready with a smile and a joke.

He is survived by his wife, Dorice Pulte Ashe; his daughter, Mary Ellen Madison and her husband George of Zanesville, Ohio; two sons, Michael Ashe and wife Maria of Cincinnati, Ohio and Dr. Herbert Ashe Jr. and wife Robin of Houston, Texas; his brother, Donald Ashe and wife, Rita of Greenville, S.C.; step-children and their spouses of Florida and North Carolina, and nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, 171 Hospital Drive, Suite 600, Highlands, NC 28741 or Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, 35 N. 5th Street, Highlands, NC 28741.

Jonathan Owen GregoryJonathan Owen Gregory

Jonathan Owen Gregory, 30, of South Knoxville, died suddenly on Aug. 22, 2013.

He was a loving husband, loving father and a loving son. He was a graduate of South Doyle High School and attended college at ESTU. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Knoxville.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kacey Danielle Gregory, two sons, Grant James Gregory and Ryder Jay Gregory, father James Gwyn Gregory, mother Ramona Lynn Gregory, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Woodlawn Cemetery. Rev. Randy Reed will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Gregory Family, 1541 Ray Cove Rd., Franklin, NC 28734.

Thelma Katrina Dixon DeesThelma Katrina Dixon Dees

Thelma Katrina Dixon Dees, 90, of Franklin, passed away Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013.

Born in Savannah, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Russell Dixon and Katherine Becker Roach. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Haywood Glynn Dees; two sisters, Dorothy Streb and Lois Bellmeyer and a brother, Russell Dixon. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Glenda Lois Hennessy of Franklin; granddaughter, Michelle Atkins and husband Chuck and great-grandson, Owen Charles Atkins.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 1, at Victory Baptist Church. Rev. Benny Bagwell, Rev. Rusty Wolfrey and Rev. Vic Greene officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bobby Morgan, James Bates, Ron Chambers, Fred Workinger, Tony Drinnon and Josh Gray.
