Mitchell Hampton Haskett

Mitchell Hampton Haskett, 96, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at a local nursing center. He was born in Macon County, the son of the late Johnny and Laura Buchanan Haskett. He worked in textile mills. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather. He loved to walk and he attended Grace Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ruby Passmore Haskett; a daughter, Laura Ann Hall and husband Dewight of Bellmont, N.C. and a son, Charles Haskett of Lenoir, N.C.; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Elsie Evelyn Haskett and Evelyn Haskett; three sons, Dewey Haskett, Ned Haskett, and Johnny Haskett; five sisters, Lorrine Passmore, Ollie Mae West, Telitha Wilks, Susie Thompson and Liz Adams; one brother, Ned Haskett.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 30, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Frank Rodriquez officiating. Burial was held at Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

William ‘Bill’ Charles Connell

William “Bill” Charles Connell, 77, of Franklin, N.C., and Titusville, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Titusville, Fla.

Robert Francis Porter

Robert Francis Porter, 92, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, Sept. 27, 2013.

Born in Elwood City, Pa., he was the son of the late Hollis and Katherine Enslen Porter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Elaine Porter who died Aug. 31, 2010. He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He is survived by his son, Dennis Porter and wife Cindy of Franklin; six grandchildren; many great grandchildren and niece and nephew, Ralph and Leona Porter. He also leaves behind his beloved golden retriever, Jack.

No services are planned.

David Brandon Weathers

David Brandon Weathers, 82, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013.

Raised in Florida and Mobile, Ala., he was the son of the late James J. Weathers and Lois Mixon Weathers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James “Jim Jeff” Weathers and Beman Weathers. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served during the Korean conflict. He worked as a chemical engineer and was manager of laboratory safety at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Rubinstein Weathers; three children: Mike Weathers and wife Melissa of Monroe, Ga., Barbara Ortega and husband Larry of Rabun Gap, Ga., and James Rubinstein and wife Devin of Saratoga, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Christopher Baer, Andrew Weathers, Lindsey Weathers, Caitlin Ortega, Jack Ortega, Parker Rubinstein and Lillian Rubinstein.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Macon Funeral Home. Rabbi Stone Zvi Altman will officiate.

Memorial donations can be made to the Macon County Art Association.

Roy Anthony Letner

Roy Anthony Letner, 84, of Otto, N.C., passed away on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013.

Born in St. Louis, Mo., he was the son of the late Roy and Catherine Letner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Valerie Dorval and a sister, Catherine. He was a U.S. Navy veteran during the Korean Conflict; a building contractor; member of St. Francis Catholic Church and he loved woodworking and reading books.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Marie Wilhelm Letner; son, Robert A. Wilhelm of Otto; brother, Eugene Letner of St. Louis, Mo.; two sisters, Adele and Virginia of St. Louis, Mo.; four grandchildren, Jesse Luke Dorval, Dawson Blaine Dorval, Nicole E. Wilhelm and Robert C. Wilhelm.

A Memorial Service was held Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Father Tien Duong officiated. VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108 will conduct military rites.

Curtis Denzel MillerCurtis Denzel Miller

Curtis Denzel Miller, 75, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, Sept. 30, 2013. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Edgar and Eva Woodard Miller. He was a lineman for GTE Telephone Company in Lakeland, Fla., and loved to go to flea markets, fish and watch golf. He was a member of Buck Creek Baptist Church.

He is survived by three sisters, Eva Jo Coggins and husband Norman of Fayetteville, N.C., Willadean Holland of Franklin, and Yvonne Burch and husband Robert of Penrose, N.C.; one brother, Wymer Miller and wife Gertrude of Hendersonville, N.C., and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Inez Teague and a brother, Willard Miller.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m. at Buck Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Jamie Passmore officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m., one hour prior to the service, at the church.

Mary Sue PhillipsMary Sue Phillips

Mary Sue Phillips, 84, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Jamie Patrick Norton and Mary Jane Brendle Norton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Bobby Frank Phillips; three brothers, Pat, Kenneth and Clyde Norton; sister, Katherine N. Deal and nephew, Jimmy Deal. She loved her cat, flowers and loved meeting and visiting people. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three nieces, Judy N. Colby of Hampton, Va., Jane P. Woodlee of Mt. Home, N.C and Suzi P. Cabe of Franklin; five nephews, Pat “Buddy” Norton of Riceville, Tenn., Kenneth Norton of Athens, Tenn., David Norton of Decatur, Tenn., Stephen Norton of Decatur, Tenn. and Billy Norton of Franklin and many great and great great nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Oct. 2, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Judson Hall officiated. Burial was in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Ronald Gary Cross

Ronald Gary Cross, 64, of Nantahala Community died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013. He was the son of the late Carl and Anna Jean May Cross.

He was a graduate of Brevard College and East Carolina University and received his master’s degree from Western Carolina University. He taught for 33 years at Nantahala School and Andrews Middle School and for many of those 33 years, coached basketball. He was a member of the Andrews Masonic Lodge No. 529. He was a former member, deacon, and Sunday School teacher at Briartown Baptist Church. He loved his family and friends, but loved God first. He was a gifted storyteller and loved his community and was always ready to lend a helping hand.

Surviving are his wife, Janet Kammerer Cross; two daughters, Maggie Brostic and husband, Mark of Cullowhee, N.C. and Lindsay Bauder and husband, Charlie of Toccoa, Ga.; a sister, Nancy Solesbee of Andrews; a brother, Donald Cross and fiancé Denise of Nantahala Community; a nephew, Tim Solesbee and wife Jennifer; several other well loved nieces, nephews, and in-laws and several special friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 29, in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews with the Rev. S.J. Waters officiating. Interment was in Briartown Baptist Cemetery. Pallbearers were Sidney May, Hoyt Owenby, Kenneth Solesbee, Rodney Chastain, Joe Barton, and Bill Shields. Honorary pallbearers were JC May, Ed Trask, Rick and Ron Trammell, and Jerry Day.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in honor of Ronald Gary Cross to the Nantahala Fire and Rescue, 19036 Wayah Rd., Topton, NC 28781.
