Marie Rogers Tilson
Marie Rogers Tilson, 101, died peacefully on Oct. 21, 2013, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center.
A native of Macon County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Dock M. and Emma Watson Rogers.
She was the oldest living member of Buck Creek Baptist Church in Highlands, N.C., and worked as a seamstress.
Survivors include her son, Virlyn Tilson and wife, Shirley of Gastonia; daughters, Della Blanton and husband Waddell of Kings Mountain, Virginia Weatherford of Asheville; grandchildren, Pam Long, Randy Tilson, Tim Tilson, Jeff Blanton and her special boy, Todd Blanton; great grandchildren, Kenya Tilson, Brittany Long, Blake Long, Luke Blanton and Jeffrey McCrorey; brother, Rev. Randall Rogers and wife Chris; sisters, Shelby Bankston and husband Rich, and Mildred Woods; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends and neighbors, Daphine and Garland Rhyne, Melissa and Gordon Tomberlin and their children, and Danny and Anita Baker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley W. Tilson; grandson, Bobby Weatherford; brother, Eldon Rogers and sister, Geneva Moss.
A funeral service was held Thursday, Oct. 24, at Buck Creek Baptist Church in Highlands, with Revs. Randall Rogers and Jamie Passmore officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
The family wishes to express a special thanks to the nurses and staff of the PICU Unit at CaroMont Regional Medical Center.

Van Edward Holland
Van Edward Holland, 71, of Franklin, N.C., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013.
Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Vernon Luther Holland and Ila Mae Potts Holland. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He enjoyed gardening, playing golf and mini-golf, loved going to car shows, going to the beach and he always enjoyed a good meal with family. He attended Franklin Church of God.
He is survived by his wife, Rebekah “Becky” Stiles Holland; five children, Joel Holland and wife Laura, Daryl Holland and wife Misty, Rita Holland Knepp and husband Michael; Deanna Holland Nichols and husband Chuck and Aimee Holland and fiance James Pader; eight brothers and sisters, Otela Bolick and husband Bobby, Carol Ashe and husband Roy, Arbutus Bolick and husband Larry, Mary Sue Sanders and husband Ray, Alice Taylor and husband Perry, Keith Holland, Alvin Holland and wife Sharon, and Philip Holland and wife Elaine; 10 grandchildren; Justin Holland, Paige Nichols, Adrienne Holland, Brandon Holland, Jadon Knepp, Keegan Knepp, Ian Knepp, Gracie Holland, Ella Pader and Autumn Pader and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held Saturday, Oct. 26, at Franklin Church of God. Rev. Thurman Jenkins and Rev. Jim Cannon officiated. Burial was in the Sugarfork Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108.
Pallbearers were Jason Banks, David Holland, Bryant Phillips, Turner Conley, Chris Stiles, Mike Harden, Lyman Holland and Kevin Holland.

Franklin Robert Turnbach
Franklin Robert Turnbach, 81, of Franklin, N.C., passed away on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013.
Born in Sugarloaf, Pa., he was the son of the late Oswald and Ada Shiner Turnbach. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Theodore Turnbach. He retired from Florida Gas Transmission where he worked as a heavy equipment operator; he was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, the Elks Oakland Park, Fla., Lodge, and enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially camping and with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eleanor Mae Letcher Turnbach; four children, Patricia Peavy (Merrell) and Charlotte Balmer (Bill) both of Franklin and Joseph Turnbach (Mary) and Michael Turnbach (Marcia) both of Sunrise, Fla.; sister, June Blamey of Conyngham, Pa.; nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Resurrection Lutheran Church. Pastor John Brunner will officiate.

Leonard E. Nylund
Leonard E. Nylund, 83, of Highlands, N.C., passed away Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013. He was born in Dedham, Mass., the son of the late Leonard Oscar Nylund and Edna Mooreshed Nylund. He was a licensed building contractor, and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during the Korean War, having flown over 50 combat missions during the war.
He is survived by his wife of 58 and a half years, Helen Colby Nylund; a daughter, Lori Nylund of Franklin; two sons, Steven Nylund and his wife Cindy and Bradford Nylund of Highlands; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Breede.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Oct. 26, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands, with David Silver officiating.

Della Ann Holland Sorrells
Della Ann Holland Sorrells, 64, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, in Highpoint, N.C. She was born in Macon County, the daughter of the late Carl and Juanita Buckner Holland. She was married 41 years to Randall Sorrells who passed away June 5, 2009. She was a homemaker and a member of Mashburn Branch Baptist Church. She was a store manager for the Twins’ Shop where she ran the Gift Gallery for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Caroline Sorrells Whitley of Saint Pauls, N.C., and her son, Randy Sorrells of Kernersville, N.C.; one granddaughter, Holland Whitley of Saint Pauls; two sisters, Carlene Wright of Thomasville, N.C., and Carolyn Herrington of Asheville, N.C.; one brother, Jackie Holland of Hickory, N.C.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 27, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Alton Dendy officiating. Burial was held at Sugarfork Baptist Church Cemetery. Mark Whitley, Joe Brogden, Rick Brogden, Alan Ashe, Sam Wright and Fred Sorrells served as pallbearers.

Paul "Nig" Claude Tallent
Paul "Nig" Claude Tallent, 79, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at an Asheville Hospital. He was a lifelong native of Macon County, the son of the late Joe and Ruth Guyer Tallent. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Cullasaja Assembly of God Church. He owned and operated Tallent’s Steak Barn for 45 years. He was a loving husband, father and Papa T.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lillie Hedden Tallent; his son, Joe Tallent and his wife Christina of Silver Spring, Md.; two grandchildren, Abby Tallent and Maddy Tallent; two sisters, Gladys Bateman and Shiela Fouts of Franklin; two brothers, Boyd Tallent of Franklin, and Lewis Tallent of Boise, Idaho. He was preceded in death by a brother, Marshall "Bull" Tallent.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Don Moffitt officiating. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Steve Tallent, Gary Fouts, Doug Fouts, Randy Fouts, Mike Tallent and Wesley Keener served as pallbearers. Robert Shepherd, Bob Guy, David Gray, Gwen Stewman, Brooklynn Keener Hopper, Perrin Keener and Julie Dowdle served as honorary pallbearers.

Doris Lee Shackleford
Doris Lee Shackleford, 80, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013. She was born in Spotsylvania, Va., the daughter of the late Larue J. Aylesworth and Katherine Talley Aylesworth. She was a CNA and her primary goal was helping other people. She was a member of Goshen Baptist Church in Spotsylvania.
She is survived by her twin sister, Dorothy Atkinson and her husband, Marvin, of Franklin, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Thelma L. Hogsed
Thelma L. Hogsed, 84, of Canton, N.C., passed away on Monday, Oct. 21, 2013. She was born Dec. 15, 1928, in Macon County, N.C., to the late Claude and Leona Sanders. She retired from the Hoover Company in 1988 after 20 years of service. She was a member of the Canton Baptist Temple and Ambassador Class.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, James D. Sanders and Ronald R. Sanders. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Jim; sons, Tony (Mary) Hogsed of Charlotte, N.C. and Rick (Debbie) Hogsed of Canton; daughter, Linda (Michael) Lewis of Gahanna, Ohio; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; brothers, Leonard C. Sanders of Macon County, Charles C. Sanders of Sylva, N.C., John J. Sanders of Macon County and Thomas B. Sanders of Little Rock, Ark.
Funeral service was held Thursday, Oct. 24, in the Reed Funeral Home North Canton Chapel, 801 Pittsburg Ave. NW with Rev. Delaney Young officiating. Burial followed in the Sunset Hills Burial Park.
