Benny Joe CrispBenny Joe Crisp

Benny “Ben” Joe Crisp, 75, of Canton, Ga., passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013.

Born in Macon County, N.C., he was the son of the late Frank Washington Crisp and Edna Birdell Estes Crisp. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jesse Edgar Crisp and Floyd Thomas Crisp. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and loved to work outdoors. He was Baptist by faith.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy Inez Ledbetter Crisp; daughter, Deborah Davidson of Franklin; son, Gary Lee Crisp of Canton, Ga.; brother, Carlos Crisp of Franklin; sister, Judith Crisp Houston of Franklin and granddaughter, Brittiney Gossett of Franklin.

Funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 9, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Robert Dryman officiated. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Jackie Dillard

Jackie Dillard, 72, of Sylva, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, in Skyland Care Center in Sylva, N.C. She was born June 28, 1941, in Jackson County, N.C. She is the daughter of the late Frank and the late Rachael (Brown) Patterson and was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers. She loved bowling, playing cards and being with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Dillard; son, Michael Dillard of Sylva; two daughters, Delores Scarborough and Teresa Rothenberg both of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Ronda Jo Mann of Franklin, N.C.; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

No formal services are planned.

Appalachian Funeral Services is assisting the family with the arrangements.


 


Grover B. Sheffield Jr.Grover B. Sheffield Jr.

Grover B. Sheffield Jr., 78, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, Nov. 8, 2013.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Grover B. Sheffield Sr. and Hassie Mae Clark Sheffield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carol Sheffield. He retired from the NCDOT where he worked for over 37 years as a supervisor. He was an active member of Snow Hill United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and clogging.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Faye Sherrill Sheffield; two sons, Terry Sheffield and Eddie Sheffield and wife Carol all of Franklin; three grandchildren, Blake Sheffield, Lauren Harrell and husband Evan, and Kelsey Sheffield; great granddaughter, Elin Harrell; four brothers, James Clark Sheffield of Webster, Wayne Sheffield of Greensboro, Ga., Larry Sheffield and Kim Sheffield both of Franklin; two sisters, Glenda Peek and Peggy Reece both of Franklin; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Sunday, Nov. 10, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Steve Miller, Rev. Clark Sheffield and Rev. Wayne Sheffield officiated. Burial was in the Snow Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

George Hebert Reed

George Hebert Reed, 73, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late William Lester Reed and Pearl Frady Reed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Eldon, Sheridan and Lester Reed Jr.

He enjoyed watching sports especially the Tarheels and Braves, he was a member of the Northside Assembly of God and was a self-employed painter.

He is survived by three sisters, Helen Henson and husband Ed of Franklin, Norma Hooper and husband Mack of Atlanta, Ga., and Gloria Yonce and husband Eddie of Franklin; brother, Charles Reed and wife Janice of Franklin; sister-in-law, Teen Reed of Highlands and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Charles Reed officiated.

Roy David ‘R.D.’ KizerRoy David ‘R.D.’ Kizer

Roy David “R.D.” Kizer, 75, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013.

Born in Austin, Texas, he was the son of the late Roy D. Kizer and Viola Brinkman Kizer. He was a 12 year U.S. Marine Corps veteran; served in Vietnam; was a member of the Smoky Mountain Detachment of the Marine Corps League and member of the VFW Post 7339. He loved to golf, fish and garden. He was Methodist by faith.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Judy Kizer; two children, David Kizer of Austin, Texas, Sheryl Mathews of Redlands, Calif.; two step-children, Gwen Fowler-Berkin of Franklin and Chris Carson of Beijing, China and several grandchildren.

No services have been planned at this time.

Gerald R. Owen

Gerald R. Owen, 84, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, Nov. 11, 2013.

Born in Danville, Va., he was the son of the late Jessie Owen and Sarah Moxley Owen. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served during the Korean conflict. He worked 20 years as an electrician for the University of Central Florida and was a member of First Christian Church of Franklin.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Owen; two children, Deborah Owen of San Antonio, Texas, and Jeff David Owen of Oviedo, Fla., and five grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, Nov. 13, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Minister Henry Puckett officiated. Burial will be in Glen Haven Memorial Park, Winter Park, Fla.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jack Donald Fowler

Jack Donald Fowler, 85, of Franklin, N.C., died Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at the residence of his son in Coleman, Ga.

He was born on May 15, 1928, in Gary, Ind., the son of the late Eugene and Edith Wright Fowler. He was a switchman for Florida Power Corp., a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Winter Park, Fla., a Mason for 50 years becoming a Master Mason and a member of the IBEW Electrical Union. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Taylor Fowler.

Survivors include two sons, Jack (Julie) Fowler of Coleman and Derrick (Kimberley) Fowler of Hoschton, Ga.; a daughter, Linda (Bill) Cronin of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; a brother, Tom (Lari) Fowler of Calif.; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services are to be conducted at a later date.

Lunsford Funeral Home in Cuthbert, Ga., is in charge of arrangements.


 


Ray Roger McConnell

Ray Roger McConnell, 70, of Hayesville, N.C., passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late B.T. Mc- Connell and Ollie Josephine Dills McConnell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thurman Bud Mc- Connell.

He is survived by his special friend, Pauline Maney of Franklin; sister, Mary Crowder of Asheville and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Monday, Nov. 11, in Prentiss Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Frank Rodriguez officiated.

Joyce Tallent HollandJoyce Tallent Holland

Joyce Tallent Holland, 78, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013. She was born in Macon County, the daughter of the late Gordon and Pallie Tallent. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell Holland who died in 2002.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister; she loved to read, doing crossword puzzles and canning. She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church where she sang in the choir.

She is survived by one daughter, Karen Perino and husband Len of Franklin, N.C.; one son, David Holland of Walled Lake, Mich.; two sisters, Cleta Ledford and Grace Greene both of Franklin; one brother, Herschel Tallent and wife Polly of Garner, N.C.; one granddaughter, Lori Jackson and fiancée Mario Hicks and one great grandson, Matthew Mitchell Hicks.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Tallent.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 10, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Rogers and Rev. Tom Nahlan officiating. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tracy Holland, Ronald Holland, Darian Greene, Charles Ledford, Dennis Holland and Mark Holland.
