Brent Rogers

Brent Rogers, 57, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014. He was born in Macon County, the son of Kenneth F. Rogers of Franklin, and the late Cora Mae Cable Rogers. He had worked at NAPA Auto Parts for 25 years as a parts salesman, and he liked to hunt and fish. He was preceded in death by his companion, Tammy Hancock.

In addition to his father, he is survived by two sons, Jimmy Rogers and Joel Rogers and both of Franklin, N.C.; two brothers, Evron Rogers and his wife Cheryl and Rick Rogers and his wife Diana all of Franklin; one nephew, Eric Rogers and his wife Meagan and one great-nephew, Cooper Rogers.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, at Pine Grove Cemetery, with Rev. Alton Dendy officiating.

Anzil Sanford Bryson

Anzil Sanford Bryson, 84, of Highlands, N.C., formerly of Rock Hill, S.C. passed away Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014. He was born in Macon County, the son of the late Arthur and Viola Vincent Bryson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Bryson. He was a retired machine operator for General Tire, he loved blue grass music and clogging, and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by a daughter, Diane Moss and her husband John of Yellow Mountain; a son, Wayne Bryson and his wife Ann of Yellow Mountain; two sisters, Wilma Reed of Highlands, and Doris Tallent of Gastonia, N.C.; two brothers, Fred Bryson of Gastonia, N.C.,and Dennis Bryson of Rock Hill, S.C.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Monday, Jan. 27, at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Keith Ashe officiating.

Laszlo ‘Laci’ Kelemen

Laszlo “Laci” Kelemen, 81, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013.

Born in Hungary, he was the son of the late Josof Kelemen and Gurelic Gergosils. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Laszlo “Laci” Kelemen. He served in the Hungarian Air Force, was a greeter at Wal-Mart and worked at the Otto Recycling Center. He was a member of Drymans Chapel United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Loretta Cranmer Kelemen; daughter, Ilona Kelemen of Los Angeles, Calif.; step daughter, Connie Montana of Langenburg, Pa.; brother, Yoska Kelemen of Belgium; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Drymans Chapel United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Drymans Chapel United Methodist Church Bldg. Fund, C/O LeAnn Muse, 600 Sam Corn Rd., Otto, NC 28763.

Ellis Irvin DeGroff

Ellis Irvin DeGroff, 93, of Rabun Gap, Ga., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014.

Born in Nunda, N.Y., he was the son of the late Leslie DeGroff and Jennie DeMocker DeGroff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra DeGroff Morris; two grandchildren, Kyle Morris and Reagan Morris and three brothers, Leslie DeGroff Jr., Herbert De- Groff and Edward DeGroff. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps, he was a P47 (Thunderbolt) Pilot during WWII and flew 79 combat missions in the European Theater, six missions were on D-Day at Normandy. He was a graduate of Cornell University; retired from NCR and then operated DeGroff Business Machines until 2000.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Freda Harris DeGroff; three children, Susan DeGroff of West Palm Beach, Fla., Richard (Pamela) DeGroff of Rabun Gap, and Robin (Gary) Sallenbach of Lake Worth, Fla.; grandchildren, Ty Cone (Michael Hartwyk) of New York, N.Y., Brian Cone of West Palm Beach, Fla., Collette (Dan) Campbell of Tallahassee, Fla., Jason (Erin) DeGroff of Tallahassee, Fla., Shaun DeGroff of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., Justin (Nicole) Sallenbach of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and Aubrey Sallenbach of Lake Worth, Fla.; great grandchildren, Ashley Campbell, D.J. Campbell and Jessica Campbell, all of Tallahassee, Fla.; and a sister, Sarah Swyers of Perry, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 25, at Rabun Gap Presbyterian Church. Rev. G. Donald Barber officiated.

Rev. John E. Maynard

Rev. John E. Maynard, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Franklin, N.C., passed away on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at the age of 75.

A member of the Association of American Lutheran Church, he had previously served churches in Moab, Utah; Buena Vista, Colo.; and Maysville and Augusta, Ky., before coming to Franklin in the fall of 2010. He began his ministry in 1987. Before he served in the ministry, he was a newspaper editor in Bottineau, N.D., and in Madison, Minn. He was a graduate of Concordia University in Mequon, Wisc. In 2008, he was named a “Colonel” in the Order Of Kentucky Colonels by the Governor of Kentucky, for his public service and charitable work.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marion, and two children, Peter (and wife Kristen) of Minneapolis, Minn. and Karen (and husband Dave Beacham), of Olympia, Wash.; and a grandson, Louis of Minneapolis.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 23, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at 7 p.m.
