Alvin Crowe Jr.Alvin Crowe Jr.

Alvin Crowe Jr., 78, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Alvin Calvin Crowe, Sr. and Pearl Reed Crowe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Morris Crowe and a sister, Doris Crowe Picklesimer. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church; he was a retired painter and he loved Nascar, going to the beach and camping.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joyce Queen Crowe; six children, Robert Alvin Crowe of Arlington, Texas, Ronnie Alan Crowe of Franklin, Kenneth Marvin Crowe of Highlands, Cheryl Crowe Jenkins of Franklin, Brian David Crowe of Atlanta, Ga. and Kayla Crowe McClain of Otto; three brothers, Joe Crowe of Nassau, Va., Wayne Crowe and Merlin Crowe both of Highlands; two aunts, Pauline Partain and Ruby Prince both of Atkins, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Eddie Stillwell, Rev. Bill Faulkner and Rev. Frank Rodriguez officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robert Crowe, Kenneth Crowe, Brian Crowe, Eddie Miller, Tony Elkins, Jason Woodard, Michael Bradley, Josh McClain, and Kale Stincell.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, “Senior Fund,” 142 Pleasant Hill Church Rd. Franklin, NC 28734.

Dorothy Ann Schellens

Dorothy Ann Schellens, 94, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, Jan. 27, 2014.

Born in Alexandria, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Guy L. Hammond and Rachel Minerva Wood Hammond. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, William Russell Hughes and John Schellens and two sisters, Elizabeth Clary and Virginia Andrew. She was a real estate broker and an artist and was a Protestant by faith.

She is survived by three children, Judith Ann Burgess and husband, Edward of Lexington, S.C., Barbara Christy and husband Joe of Franklin and William Steven Hughes and wife Gloria of Houston, Texas; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

No services have been planned at this time.

Joe Albert Christy IIJoe Albert Christy II

Joe Albert Christy II, 74, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.

Born in Charleston, W.Va., he was the son of the late Joe Albert Christy Sr. and Justine Clevinger Christy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Julius Albert Christy. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was owner/operator of Franklin Town Cobbler for 12 years and was a member of Victory Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara Christy; two children, Julia Ann Christy Pile and husband Jeff of Tampa, Fla., and Joe A. Christy III and wife, Deborah of Franklin; sister, Betty Annadeane Earnhardt of Tampa, Fla. and two grandsons, William Pile and Nicolas Scott Christy.

Funeral service was held Sunday, Feb. 2, at Victory Baptist Church. Rev. Rusty Wolfrey, Rev. Benny Bagwell and Mike Fitzgerald officiated with military rites conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were deacons of the church, Chad Parker, Ken Williams, Bruce Rish, Steven Southard, Jeff Pile, Frank Copeland, John Long, Jerry Cool, James Rish, Justin Castle and grandson, Nicolas Christy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to a hospice of your choice.

Shirley J. McCall

Shirley J. McCall, 78, of Slocomb, Ala., formerly of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at Hartford Health Care.

He was born Aug. 22, 1935, in Franklin, to the late Samuel and Bessie Sorrells McCall. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed working outside. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran who served in France and Korea and was also a Mason. He was a loving father and grandfather who will be greatly missed. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Kenneth McCall.

He is survived by three daughters, Terri Lynn Johnson (Scott) and Tammy Enfinger (Ricky), both of Slocomb, and Shirley Louise Chase (Andy), of Walterboro, S.C.; two sisters: Joyce Hedrick and Faye Marlin (Ted) both of Franklin; three brothers: Jerry McCall (June), of Franklin, Bill McCall (Louise), of Jonesborough, Ga. and Charles McCall, Lake Orion, Mich.; sister-inlaw, Nancy McCall, Trenton, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.

Funeral services were held at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin, on Monday, Feb. 3. Burial followed at Sugarfork Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Judson Hall officiating and Bryant-Grant Funeral Home directing.

Cliff Michael OwenCliff Michael Owen

Cliff Michael Owen, 62, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, in Charles George VA Medical Center. Born in Hendersonville, N.C., he was the son of Mildred Tabor Owen of Brevard, N.C., and the late Alfred Joseph Owen. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army serving during Vietnam. He was a member of Watauga Baptist Church. He was an avid knife collector and loved camping and hunting.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Kathy Sever Owen; two step-sons, Andrew and Christopher Green, both of Franklin; four aunts, Verna Cofer and her husband Jackie and their daughter, Debbie Devore, Betty Massingale, Joan Ann Tabor and Clare Waller; one uncle, Don Tabor and his wife Millie. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by by a sister, Diane Arthur, and an uncle, Jack Tabor.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Wesley Price and Rev. Roy Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in Strain Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m., one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.
