Franklin’s Main Street District established an initiative to welcome new businesses to the area. The Red Carpet Event is designed to promote new businesses while aiding business owners in spreading the word about their shops.

Franklin native, April Chastain of April’s Flowers on Main, located on Stewart Street next to the Rathskeller, was the first business owner to experience the red carpet treatment during an Oct. 4 ceremony. Members of town government, downtown business owners, board members of the Main Street Program, and family and friends who attended the grand opening of Chastain’s flower shop were pleased with the turn out.

On Thursday, Oct. 27, Blue Ridge Entrepreneurial Council, an initiative of AdvantageWest, hosts Venture Local, a forum designed to help business owners, aspiring entrepreneurs and potential investors understand the growing “local” movement in the United States and Western North Carolina and find ways to take advantage of the phenomenon.

The Franklin Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony recently to welcome City Plumbing & Electric Supply Company to the Franklin business community. Located at 266 Highlands Road, the Franklin store is the eighth addition to the 57-year old company.

City Plumbing & Electric Supply is one of the largest plumbing and electrical distributors in the nation and carries all of the top name brands. The store feature spacious showrooms displaying lighting, plumbing and appliances for the entire home.

A free seminar on Business Use of Your Home will be held Thursday, Sept. 29, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Southwestern Community College’s Macon Campus.

Sponsored by SCC’s Small Business Center, the course will be taught by Arlene Childers, assistant director of NC Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning (NC REAL). Childers will lead the class and help participants with procedures and forms required to figure and claim the deductions for business use of a home.
