Features Health & Wellness Home for the Holidays blood drive under way

The American Red Cross is holding the following blood drives in the area:

— Sunday, Oct. 2 - Otto Community Blood Drive in conjunction with Otto Fire and Rescue Bar B Que at Asbury United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 8289 Georgia Road, Franklin, 12:30 to 5 p.m. Call Phyllis Castle at (828)524-9307 to schedule an appointment.

— Tuesday, Oct. 4 - Macon County Library Blood Drive, 149 Siler Farm Road, Franklin, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Call (828)524-3600 to schedule an appointment.

The Home for the Holidays campaign, which runs from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, gives each person who presents to donate blood or platelets with the Red Cross an opportunity to enter a drawing for the chance to win roundtrip Delta Air Lines domestic tickets.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. The American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to patients in 103 hospitals. Approximately 1,600 people need to give blood or platelets each week day to meet hospital demand.

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Most healthy people age 17 and older, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements.
