“Living and working in Western North Carolina, I am familiar with the regional reputation for quality care and the collaborative relationship that the physicians and midwives enjoy at Smoky Mountain Obstetrics & Gynecology,” Howard said. “I consider the physician/ midwife relationship indispensable to the safe provision of healthcare for women and I am excited to enter a collaborative practice.”

Howard received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at the University of New Hampshire in 2004. In May of this year she earned a Master of Science degree in nursing, with a nurse midwifery concentration, at East Carolina University. She has had Lamaze childbirth training and also speaks Spanish.

While attending East Carolina University, she worked in private practices and in health departments caring for women from a demographic cross-section of the state’s population.

“I choose to be a nurse-midwife because the principles of the midwifery model of care resonate with me in a fundamental way,” Howard said. “My basic practice philosophy is grounded in the inherent strength, wisdom and capability of women to progress through the three major reproductive stages of life. Women usually require an emphasis on wellness, education and normalization of experience, rather than treatment from a perception of illness or deficiency, although I am comfortable identifying the need for an individualizing intervention to produce safe and excellent outcomes for mothers and babies.”

Howard is originally from a small town in New Hampshire, but has been a resident of Western North Carolina for more than six years. She has three dogs and enjoys hiking and exploring the mountains. She also enjoys contra dancing.

Howard joins Dr. Janine Keever, Dr. Anton Van Duuren, and Betsy Swift, CNM at Smoky Mountain Obstetrics & Gynecology. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (828)586-7802.
