A free informative presentation to help explain Medicare and benefits will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at Macon Senior Services located in the Dorothy R. and John L. Crawford building at 108 Wayah Street, near the Chamber of Commerce. This presentation will be done by SHIIP (Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program). Several months before turning 65, you should begin to learn more about your Medicare options and how it relates to your circumstances. Also, people that are new to Medicare due to disability will benefit from this presentation.
There were 103,000-plus North Carolinians who turned 65 in 2012. You must anticipate and plan for becoming a Medicare beneficiary. Don't wait until you're 65 to start thinking about your Medicare choices.
SHIIP, a division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance, provides free, unbiased information about Medicare, supplemental health insurance, Medicare health plans, prescription drug coverage, extra help for drug coverage, and many other insurance-related issues. It is recommended that you clarify your Medicare options between all the products before enrolling so that you don't make any hurried decisions at the last minute. Get accurate information about coverage, and this informative class session will answer many of your questions and possibly help you avoid costly problems. Your Medicare choices will depend on several factors, including:
Are you retired, or will you or your spouse continue to work? Will you have access to medical and/or prescription drug coverage through an Employer Group Health Plan? How does your Employer Group Health Plan compare with Medicare supplement plans and Medicare Advantage plans?
SHIIP has created a handout meant to help navigate the Medicare system and initial enrollment process. "The Road to Medicare," outlines the decisions you'll need to make and what options are available through the Medicare system.
