An altercation in the South Skeenah community last Sunday resulted in the arrests of two brothers.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., officers with the Macon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 9-1-1 call of an assault in progress. The caller explained that Dustin “Dut” Reed Hathcock, 25, and Preston Ross Hathcock, 31, had been fighting at the younger brother’s residence.
While the officers were en route to the incident, the caller reportedly advised dispatch that the older brother Preston had left in his red Dodge pickup truck, and that she was taking her boyfriend Dustin to the emergency room.
As deputies Anthony Hopkins and David Blanton were traveling to the Hathcock residence, they met up with Preston at Ruby Cinemas on 441 after spotting his truck. According to Hopkins’ report, Preston confirmed that he was involved in the altercation.
According to MCSO Corporal Ryan Angel, both brothers had assaulted one another with metal plumbing pipes, however it is unclear at this point what the fight was about. “They have both given conflicting stories,” he said, adding that both parties were compliant with the officers.
Preston had reportedly sustained a laceration on the back of his head, cuts beneath his left ear and on his forehead, as well as a scratch on his left shoulder from the incident. Upon evaluation by a medical unit, it was determined that Preston required stitches for the laceration on the back of his head, and he promptly left with his wife to go to the emergency room.
Dustin had reportedly sustained a severe cut to his nose.
After being released from the emergency room, both brothers wrote out statements on one another and were arrested for felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. They were both booked on a $1,000 secured bond and were released on the same day. Dustin and Preston are expected in District Court on June 30.
