News Operation Firecracker nets seven DWIs in Macon

During last week’s statewide “Booze it or Lose It: Operation Firecracker” campaign, state and local law enforcement officers throughout North Carolina cited 1,192 motorists for driving while impaired, said State Transportation Secretary Gene Conti, in a recent press release. During the statewide campaign, which ran from June 27 to July 4, a total of 42,997 traffic and criminal citations were issued statewide.

“The Governor’s Highway Safety Program, along with state and local law enforcement officers worked hard during this campaign to remove drunk drivers and other violators from our roads,” Conti said. “Safety is our top priority and this effort shows there are serious consequences to drinking and driving.”

In Macon County, seven drunk drivers were arrested during the operation, which involved the Macon Count Sheriff’s Office, Highlands and Franklin Police Departments and the State Highway Patrol. Nineteen seatbelt violations, 4 drug violations and 58 speeding tickets were issued by county officers during the time. The collaborating agencies netted a total of 149 traffic and criminal violations during the operation with three traffic checkpoints and 21 saturation patrols.

“This was just another extension of the responsibilities of law enforcement,” said MCSO sheriff Robbie Holland on Tuesday. “We have to keep our community safe.”

During the Governor’s Highway Safety Program campaign, officers statewide conducted 3,728 sobriety checkpoints and dedicated patrols. Counties with the highest number of DWI citations were Mecklenburg (91), Durham (78), Wake (54) and Guilford (44).

Officers throughout the state ultimately issued 3,567 safety belt and 592 child passenger safety violations, 12,834 speeding violations and 863 drug charges. In addition, they apprehended 414 fugitives from justice and recovered 39 stolen vehicles. Fourteen of the fugitives nabbed in the operation were apprehended in Macon County.
