News Body found in Coweeta Lab area identified

Shelly Ann BurrisMacon County Sheriff's Office has identified the woman found dead last Tuesday afternoon in the Coweeta Lab area of Macon County. The deceased has been identified as 39- year-old Shelly Ann Burris of both Anderson, S.C. and Franklin, N.C.

Burris’ body was discovered by a group of bear hunters last Tuesday afternoon off of a service road in the Nantahala National Forest. Her car was found to be abandoned at a service gate and her body was found down an embankment in a creek.

The cause of death has yet to be released as authorities are awaiting a confirmation of an autopsy report. Macon County Sheriff Robbie Holland said on Tuesday afternoon that the preliminary investigation found no injuries to the deceased's body and evidence at the scene indicated that there was no cause for immediate safety concern for the community.

Law enforcement is also waiting for the conclusion of a toxicology report to help in determining the cause of death. Holland said the toxicology report could take several weeks.
