N.C. Department of Transportation Secretary Gene Conti has awarded a contract to replace the bridge on Mirror Lake Road over the Cullasaja River near Highlands in Macon County.
A $577,544 contract was awarded to Dane Construction Inc. of Mooresville. Work can begin as early as April 25 and is scheduled to be completed by Dec. 31.
The bridge, constructed in 1960, needs to be replaced due to its age and condition.
An off-site detour will be in place directing motorists to continue on U.S. 64 through Highlands, turning left on Hicks Road and following back to Mirror Lake Road. The detour is approximately five miles.
This is one of 10 contracts totaling $78.2 million awarded by Conti this month for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. The contracts were awarded to the lowest bidders, as required by state law and came in at 8.4 percent, or about $14.4 million, below NCDOT estimated. An 11th project, in Nash County, will be considered for final approval next week.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, every $1 million spent on transportation creates 30 jobs, and according to the construction industry, every dollar invested in transportation generates $6 in economic impact.
