At the June 30th monthly meeting, the Gem & Mineral Society was gratified to meet one of their recipients for the 2011 $500 scholarships.
After an arduous search by Jean Emerson, the Scholarship Chairman struck gold in the person of Klara Ledford. This poised and intelligent lady is striving to get a Major in Secondary Education with a focus on Earth Science, and a minor in Geology.
Ledford is a fifth year senior, having transferred from a private college to Western Carolina University. A premium on double major course costs had made her only minor in geology. Her scholarship funds came at a good time.
A home-grown lady, Ledford would like to teach in Franklin, even with budget cuts in the teaching profession, she is still determined to stay in the mountains. She will graduate in May 2012.
Ledford has worked summers as a waitress to finance her education, and as she returns to college in the fall, she will work part-time at a shop she and her mother have started: Cocoon Design & Consignment Shop.
