News Community LBJ kicks off Adopt A Highway project

LBJ Job Corps staff and students from (L-R) are Marvin Ramsey (Liaison Specialist), Sinise Simmons, Calvin Wimberly, Juquone Townsend, Jamontai Carter, Colton Murphy, Aaron Perales, Antonio Turner, Angel Wilson and Sharlene Jenkins.Lyndon B. Johnson has kicked off its quarterly “Adopt A Highway” project for this year.

“We have been a part of this grassroots project since 1996,” said Marvin Ramsey, liaison specialist. “I’ve been really impressed with the responsibility that our students have taken with the highway clean up. They have gone above and beyond what is expected of them. Our neighbors have even stopped along the road at times to give a smile and a cheerful wave or to congratulate our students on taking the initiative to keep the roads clean.”

When LBJ first partnered with the State on the “Adopt A Highway” initiative, volunteers started out cleaning a small portion of Wayah Road. Now students are maintaining the entire road starting from the Job Corps Center to the Old Murphy Road intersection. LBJ students and center “Green Team” members are encouraging sustainability and reductions of our footprint that will benefit the entire environment.

LBJ’s goal is to encourage motorists to refrain from littering, while protecting the natural land and preserving the environment.

The mission of the USDA Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the million acres of public land; to provide assistance to state and private landowners and to maintain the largest forestry research organization in the world.
