Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler inducted a Macon County man into the N.C. Mountain State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame during a ceremony held Friday, Sept. 7, at the Western N.C. Agricultural Center.

Steve Ledford was one of two inductees recognized for his outstanding contributions to the livestock shows at the Mountain State Fair. Mike Stiles of Cherokee County was the other inductee. Each inductee received a plaque for their accomplishments. An additional plaque will be displayed in the Livestock Sales Arena following the 2012 N.C. Mountain State Fair.


Board will allocate from community funding pool.

With the weight of the economy just beginning to lighten, nonprofits in Franklin found themselves before the Franklin Board of Aldermen to request crucial funds for community programs.

The board heard requests from non-profits operating in Franklin for grants from the town's funding pool. “Typically the town sets aside funding each fiscal year to be used by the nonprofits in Franklin,” said Mayor Joe Collins during the meeting.


Awarded Macon County Medallion of Honor

The Macon County Board of Commissioners will honor two men from Macon County who were among the longest serving prisoners of the Vietnam War in a special ceremony in Franklin on Wednesday, Sept. 26.

Nathan B. “Nat” Henry, a lifelong Macon County resident, and Dr. Thomas M. McNish, who grew up in Macon County, will each receive the Macon County Medallion of Honor during the ceremony, scheduled for 2 p.m. at the gazebo on the square in downtown Franklin.


A “School Daze” potluck was held at Country Woods RV Park in Franklin to sponsor South Macon Elementary School to collect needed items for the school.

First grade teacher’s aide Karen Rodriquez was invited as a guest and was surprised with the items that the residents of Country Woods had collected.

The RV’ers have decided to make this an annual event to help the school with its needs.
