A Change of Command Ceremony was recently held for CPT John O’Brien formerly of Franklin, making him the Commander of C Battery 1st Battalion 19th Field Artillery at Ft. Sill, Okla.

CPT O’Brien was born in Sterling, Ill. He enlisted in the Army in December 1985. He attended Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Ft. Sill, Okla. He was awarded the MOS 13F (Fire Support Specialist). His first assignment was with HHB 2-3 Field Artillery (FA) in Kirchgoens, Germany from November 1986 – May 1989. Additionally CPT O’Brien served eight years in the National Guard as a member of the 227th FA Brigade (BDE), 3-116th FA Battalion (BN) and 210th Military Police.

Boy Scout Troop 1099, chartered to Lanier United Methodist Church, is pleased to announce that Dalton Corbin has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Dalton successfully passed his Eagle Board of Review and has been recognized with a Court of Honor ceremony following completion of his service project at the Bald Ridge Marina Chapel on Lake Lanier.

Dalton’s Eagle Project consisted of dismantling and removing a pair of outdated storage facilities, constructing a new storage building along with new bench seating. His project also included refurbishing the Chapel Cross with new foundation timbers, as well as sanding and repainting the fifteen foot tall steel structure. Bald Ridge Marina Chapel serves as the site of weekly outdoor worship services hosted by Cumming First United Methodist Church from May through September.

Every semester at Franklin High School, seniors are required to complete a project on an approved topic. Students must write a research paper, make a presentation board and present an eight-minute speech in front of a panel of judges before they are permitted to graduate.

FHS senior Maddie Brown decided to work with Sole Hope, an organization which is comprised of passionate, committed people who work toward putting closed-toed shoes on African children, one pair at a time. “Choosing to do Sole Hope for my senior project was the wisest decision I could have made,” said Brown. “It gave me a chance to spread God’s love while helping others, it was my ministry!”

American Legion Post’s Bingo night needs support

With the economy recovering at a painfully slow rate, it is more important than ever to work together to take care of the community. Several organizations throughout Macon County have offered a helping hand to lessen the burden on their neighbors, and the members of American Legion Post 108 have been doing their part by hosting a night of bingo every Friday night to raise money for community needs.

All of the proceeds earned during the bingo games get put directly back into the community.
