Ralph E. Morgan Jr. has retired from the Versailles (Ky.) Police Department.

Morgan is a native of Franklin, N.C. and is the son of Bertha Neal and the late Ralph E. Morgan Sr. After graduating from Franklin High School in 1989, he joined the United States Air Force, serving four years, including a tour of duty in the Middle East for Operation Desert Storm.

After his four years in the service, he moved to Lexington, Ky. to pursue a career in Law Enforcement. He was first hired at Nicholasville Police Department before transferring to Versailles Police Department.

During his 20-year law enforcement career, he served in various roles and ranks.

Deborah Grant graduates from Leadership North Carolina

The Cherokee Preservation Foundation announced that Deborah Grant, the Foundation’s Finance Officer, recently graduated from the Leadership North Carolina program’s Class XVIII.

“The Leadership North Carolina program was an amazing experience,” said Grant. “I visited six cities across the state and learned from leaders in many disciplines about the opportunities and challenges North Carolina faces. I now have a much broader understanding of how all our 100 counties are interrelated in addressing environment, education, health and human services, economic development and government issues.

The 3rd annual Ruby Bash Rally and Joy Poker Run will be held on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., at the Wayne Proffitt Agricultural Center located on the Georgia Road. The rally is sponsored by the Dedicated Bikers of WNC and REACH of Macon County.

A $15 gate fee will be charged that includes a meal voucher and door prize, plus $20 or an unwrapped toy of equal value per bike entry. The toys will be given to children that have been victims of domestic violence.

The Whistle Stop Mall was proud to host a fundraiser and recruitment drive for The Children’s Home, Inc. Saturday, August 20, in an effort to 'Change a Life Forever.'

The main event was an exhibition by Danny Antoine’s Karate Academy. The Nikwasi Dulcimer Players were another featured entertainment. There was also a bake sale, raffles, a magic show by volunteer Mike Barboff and a foster parent recruitment booth.
