The Region A partnership for Children has received $20,000 in grant funding from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina to supplement current funding to expand the Family Support Network Project in Region A. The Community Foundation is a nonprofit serving 18 counties in Western North Carolina.

The Region A Family Support Network program has operated for eight years in the region serving over 1400 families. Families of children with special needs benefit from the help and support that other families provide and from information about their child’s special needs and available resources.


Macon County receives funding to expand program.

Macon County's preschool program is among the best in the state when it comes to providing educational opportunities to all children, some as young as three years old.

Macon County recently received additional funding from the state to expand the county's preschool program in order to be able to meet growing demands.


With increased budget cuts and unfunded mandates being passed down from the state, Macon County Schools' operation budget from year to year continues to be uncertain. This year alone, school officials found themselves scrambling to make up for a last minute $550,000 shortfall. Interim Superintendent Dr. Jim Duncan worked with the central office staff to identify any and all areas in the school system's budget that could sustain cuts.

In its second month, the school system's new energy saving program has already proved to be an easy way to lower operation costs for the schools, while increasing the district's efficiency.


New Century Scholars from Jackson, Macon and Swain counties were recently inducted during a ceremony on Southwestern Community College’s Jackson Campus.

The New Century Scholars Program began in 1995 and is a collaborative educational effort among the public schools in Macon, Jackson and Swain counties and Southwestern Community College. The program targets “high potential” students at the end of sixth grade and provides extra support to those students through their middle school and high school years and while they attend Southwestern Community College.
