For new recipients of Social Security, other federal benefits

Plan estimated to save taxpayers $1 billion

The U.S. Department of the Treasury is retiring the paper Social Security check for millions of baby boomers and others applying for federal benefits, a move that will save taxpayers $1 billion over the next 10 years. Beginning May 1, 2011, anyone newly applying for Social Security, Veterans Affairs or other federal benefits will need to choose an electronic payment method – paper checks will no longer be an option. People currently receiving their federal benefits by paper check must switch to direct deposit by March 1, 2013.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has recently charged seven individuals for larcenies which involved removing telephone lines from their poles. The individuals have been linked with four separate occurrences where telephone lines were taken, stripped and sold.

Two separate telephone companies — Frontier Communications and AT&T — have been victimized during this series of events dating back to March 27, 2011. Four individuals have been apprehended and three are still being sought by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

The case of the shooting death of a Jackson County woman has come to an end, and upon review of investigation files, the incident has been ruled accidental by District Attorney Mike Bonfoey.

“The investigation conducted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was thorough and comprehensive,” said Bonfoey in a May 3 statement. “The investigation of the death of Hannah Frey reveals no evidence of criminal homicide. Furthermore, the investigation indicates that the death of Hannah Frey was the result of a tragic accidental shooting. Based on the investigation and a review of the law the District Attorney’s Office concurs with the Sheriff’s Office that no criminal charges should be initiated.”

In the early morning hours of Feb. 18, Hannah Frey, 24, was shot and killed by her uncle, James Dennis Eller, 49, who mistook her for an intruder, according to authorities.
