Opinion Letters Lives were touched by ‘Holiday Angels’

Take a moment and walk through a scenario that goes on in many households in our communities every day. A young single parent asks himself or herself a difficult question repeatedly, “I am only working part time and I have three young children who are anxiously waiting for Christmas Eve. I do not have money to pay the rent and put gas in the car to get Jay to the doctor, so how am I going to give my children even one gift for Christmas?” With economic hardships facing so many, even the working full time two-parent families are struggling to make ends meet. They may be your neighbors, family, or total strangers, but until you envision their struggle, it is a hard burden to comprehend. MPP Holiday Angels was created for this very purpose. To involve community partners, to network resources and to reach out to families in need during the Christmas holidays.

Our heartfelt thanks to the exceptional 58 community sponsors who adopted 303 children and the remaining 28 children were sponsored by Holiday Angels monetary donations. Several elderly and special needs adults who were not sponsored received Ingles food gift cards purchased with donations. A special thanks to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary who collected and donated new toys that were distributed to the children sponsored by the Holiday Angels committee. A newly improved goal this year was working closely with the elementary schools to distribute applications to families in need and match those children up with community churches in specific school districts when possible.

A special thanks to Toys for Tots, Franklin Lions Club, Caterpillar, Wells Fargo Bank and Dodge Packaging for their multiple sponsorships and generosity. Whether you sponsored one child or 35 children, Holiday Angels values each contributor as a vital and worthwhile supporter. On behalf of the families who received some type of assistance and Macon Program for Progress, please accept our heartfelt appreciation for everyone’s support of the 2013 Holiday Angels project. Your kindness truly touched lives!
