A recent editorial in the Asheville Citizen-Times got me thinking. How will Dr. Jim Davis's vote to deny expanded Medicaid coverage affect citizens of Macon County. Surely a medical professional like Dr Davis would vote for the best interests of his constituents, or would he?

The N.C. legislature in its infinite wisdom voted to deny expanded Medicaid for the state. Basically, that will deny health insurance coverage to about 500,000 citizens of the state, cost the state about $1.3 billion in increased state domestic product, and create real financial difficulties for the state's health providers. Since this money comes from federal tax dollars, we as N.C. citizens have already paid our share of this money. Our tax money will now go to other states like New York. So how will this decision affect us living in Macon County?

We [Kitchen Gourmet] had the opportunity to take part in a Cash Mob event sponsored by Venture Local Franklin (a group of engaged citizen helping to stimulate retail business in the Franklin area).

Cash Mob is a one-hour event usually held on a Friday night from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. We provided wine and cheese, and decided to give back 10 percent of the sales to the Franklin Garden Club. They volunteer their time to maintain the square in downtown Franklin.

We had a "Mob" of about 50 people. They had agreed to spend at least $20 each. In one hour, we did two and a half days of sales. It was a great event for us. The "Mob" had a good time, and socialized for the hour.

My neighbor Vic Drummond has earned the highly esteemed honor of being allowed to join in the ranks of the Flat Earth Society with his powerful remarks in a recent letter to the editor in The Franklin Press. He used the most effective communication method of our society which was first espoused by Joseph Goebbels: "If you tell a lie big enough and often enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually believe it."

Drummond forthrightly criticized Obama for trying to attack this "non-existent climate change crisis." He continued "why does he (Obama) think he can modify nature?" Drummond so wisely didn't even try to argue against the fact that 97 percent of climate scientists in published scientific articles between 1991 and 2011 agree that there is severe climate warming and that humans are causing it.

In a new letter to the editor, Sen. Thom Goolsby restated his headline “Moron Mondays” to a new agenda titled “Money Mondays.” Ahah, the truth is out! He has to connect money to Rev. Barber’s movement because he and his Republican cronies cannot, for the life of them, connect the movement with morality. There is not a moral bone in their bodies. Talk about money. This legislature was, with the help of the “Citizens United” case, bought and paid for by corporate money.

There is another movement afoot to amend the Constitution to declare that corporations are not persons. Sixteen states have signed resolutions to amend. It takes 38 states to take it to Congress. It will take some time but it will be done. Petitions online at MoveToAmend.
