Outdoors Kids Fishing Day at Cliffside Lake Saturday, June 4

Forest Service to host Kids Fishing Day at Cliffside Lake picnic area

The USDA Forest Service’s Nantahala Ranger District invites children, ages 15 and under, to the annual Kids Fishing Day Saturday, June 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cliffside Lake, just west of Highlands on U.S. 64.

The event introduces kids to the basics of fishing and helps them gain an appreciation for the sport and for fish habitat. Volunteers will be on-hand to teach children the craft of casting, baiting the hook, and reeling in the catch.

Registration is free and begins at 8:30 a.m. at Cliffside Lake.

Participants should bring their own rod, bait and stringer. Adults must accompany children. The Forest Service is conducting the event in cooperation with Bass Pro Shops, Neuse Sport Shop, N.C. State Council of Trout Unlimited, and N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.

Young anglers registered at the Cliffside Lake Kids Fishing Day are eligible to enter a statewide drawing for fishing-related prizes, such as tackle boxes, rods and reels, fish playing cards, fishing towels and muchmore. Neuse Sport Shop will donate the grand prize, a lifetime unified sportsman license, including hunting and fishing in fresh and saltwater.

The N.C. State Council of Trout Unlimited will provide the first prize, a lifetime freshwater fishing license. Bass Pro Shops and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will donate about 15 other fishing-related prizes.

The Forest Service is conducting the event as part of National Fishing and Boating Week, June 4-12, during which local events will occur in the communities across the country.
