Farmers and ranchers transitioning to organic as well as established organic producers have another opportunity to apply for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) Organic Initiative funding to assist their organic efforts. The deadline for this application period is May 20, 2011.

The USDA recently announced that they will, for the third consecutive year, invest $50 million in funding for the EQIP Organic Initiative, which provides a 75% share of the cost of implementing organic conservation measures to those who qualify - 90% for beginning, limitedresource and socially-disadvantaged farmers and ranchers.

The North Carolina Wildlife Federation is accepting nominations through May 31, 2011 for Conservation Achievement Awards.

These awards honor individuals, governmental bodies, associations and others who have exhibited an unwavering commitment to conservation in North Carolina. By recognizing, publicizing and honoring these conservation leaders — young and old, professional and volunteer — the North Carolina Wildlife Federation hopes to inspire all North Carolinians to take a more active role in protecting the natural resources of our state.

A $5,000 reward has been posted for anyone providing information leading to the arrest/conviction of persons involved in a recent elk kill in Haywood County.

This bull elk, killed near Hicks Branch in the 12-Mile Strip area, was one of 24 elk released in 2001 in the Cataloochee Valley of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Poachers took antlers, hide, feet, and meat, leaving only the carcass and radio collar behind.
