Two more Franklin High School seniors have signed to play sports at colleges next year, adding to a long list of outstanding athletes in the Class of 2011 who have received sports scholarships.
On May 20, Jordan Pickens signed with Walter State to play softball. Pickens played All-Conference with FHS softball multiple years and was named Conference Player of the Year during her junior year.
Softball Coach Penny Moffitt says that Pickens has had her eye on college softball for years. “Anybody that knows Jordan knows she's always had plans to play college softball,” said Moffitt. “She's a huge asset on and off the field; she shows a lot of leadership qualities.”
Moffitt, who has known Jordan since she was a little girl, says she was proud to see her mature as a person and a player. “She’s a really respected young lady on the field, by her peers, by teachers and at her church.”
On May 31, Blair Long signed with Mars Hill to play soccer. Blair, who has been an avid player since she was a little girl, has been a key member of FHS soccer since she arrived.
Her JV Coach, Rita Esterwood, says she wasn’t surprised at all by the selection.
“Her heart and soul is all about soccer,” said Esterwood. “She’s got a lot of enthusiasm and drive. She plays real hard and gives it all she's got, and she'll do real well for Mars Hill.”
Generally an offensive player, mid-field to forward, Blair also competed in cross country at FHS, which Esterwood says has given her added endurance. “She just loves the sport, and she's got what it takes to be a fantastic soccer player,” said Esterwood.
