The Franklin High School varsity basketball teams travelled to Waynesville Tuesday, Feb. 19, for the second round of the WNCAC Tournament where they met the Tuscola Mountaineers. After coming off big wins in the opening round of the tournament, the men’s and women’s teams looked to keep their momentum against Tuscola, who handed them each a loss in their last meeting, Feb. 12.

The girls started the night slower than usual, finding themselves outscored after the first quarter, but were able to turn it around, eventually sealing the win, 54-40. The Lady Panthers will now head to a meeting with the Pisgah Sugar Bears in the WNCAC Tournament Championship on Thursday, Feb. 21, at Tuscola High School, hosts of this year’s tournament. This will be the third time the teams have met this year. Pisgah has won in both of their prior meetings.

The boys started out strong in their showdown with the Mountaineers, but were unable to keep up the pace. The Panthers were facing an 11 point deficit to start the second half and were unable to slow the the barrage, ultimately falling, 74-54, bringing their season to an end.

In other sports: The boys wrestling team will head to regionals on Fri. Feb. 22, hosted by North Gaston High School. Any wrestler who finishes fourth or higher in this tournament will qualify for the State tournament the following weekend, March 2, that will take place in Greensboro. Franklin will host a softball scrimmage on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Macon Middle School.
