Franklin Soccer routs Murphy ... again
In a rematch of a game played on Aug. 19, which the Panthers won 9-0, the Panthers doubled their pleasure and defeated the Bulldogs, 9-0, in a game played on Aug. 28. The game was called in the 59th minute because of the mercy rule. Angel Chavez got the Panthers on the board in the sixth minute when he found the back of the net that was set up by a pass from Jose Lopez. Eighteen minutes later, Lopez scored on a nice set up from Gustavo Velasco. Kendrick Manning scored on a penalty kick and Uriel Rivera scored with two minutes left in the first half. The Panthers led 4-0 at halftime. In a five-minute span in the second half, the Panthers scored five times to end the game. Riggy Hernandez scored twice, Jesus Zalapa scored twice, and Jeremy Jordan scored. Chris Richards, Omar Arellano, Jordan, and Walter Perez all recorded assists.
FHS 2, Highlands, 1
In the soccer game between Franklin and Highlands played on Aug. 29, the Highlanders jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute, when Kenan Lewis headed in a throw from Tyler Munger. In the ninth minute, the Panthers pulled even. Riggy Hernandez sent a long pass up the field to Jose Lopez, who deposited it in the back of the net to tie the score at one. The score remained tied through halftime and into the 66th minute. That is when the brother combination of Angel Chavez and Jesus Damian put the Panthers ahead. The brothers used a nice give-and-go pass to find the back of the net. Chavez assisted to Damian. The Panthers were able to hold the lead the last 14 minutes to take the highly contested and physical matchup. The win took the Panthers to 3-0 on the season. The Highlanders are 2-2. The Panthers will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 5, when they host Erwin in a nonconference matchup. The junior varsity will open its season at 5 p.m. and the varsity will start at 7 p.m.
FHS Golf news
The women's golf team travelled to Cherokee on Aug. 26 to take on Cherokee and Smoky Mountain. Franklin defeated both with Erin Campbell winning the tournament with a score of 43.
On Aug. 28, the team played at Etowah and finished fourth out of seven teams.
On Sept. 3, the team finished eighth out of 13 teams in the WNC Tournament at Forest City. Erin Campbell finished with a score of 43 and placed sixth out of 39 golfers.
