Gwen “Pops” Howard received the Above and Beyond Award.Exceptional Franklin High School student athletes were recognized at the annual athletic awards banquet held Wednesday, May 25. Scheduled speakers reminded the students of the importance of their role in school sports programs and that the experience of competing as a high school athlete would last for the rest of their life.

The athletes were awarded for their outstanding performance throughout the year.

Christopher Dills received the Stan Sloan Scholarship.“We salute you,” said Macon County Public Schools superintendent Dan Brigman to the FHS athletes and parents that supported them. “Sports are the best dropout prevention, and you all have served as role models… We’re here to honor you and each of your contributions.”

The 29th annual FHS Booster Club Athletic Awards Ceremony was held at Mountain View Intermediate School in front of more than 300 people, which included 81 seniors. The awards ceremony was hosted by 96.7 WNCC radio personalities George Young and Keith Giles.

Tim McAllister received the Brandon Stiwinter Scholarship.To kick off the awards ceremony, school board chairman Tommy Cabe presented the Above and Beyond award to Gwen “Pops” Howard for his far reaching active support of FHS sports. “This man not only supports us at home, you’ll see him at away games, too,” said Cabe.

Frankie Carapazza received the Walter Scruggs Scholarship.Alton Sutton presented The Tom Raby Memorial Scholarship Award to Ben Carrion and Jordan Pickens. Sutton said that Raby “believed in winning and losing with dignity,” and that the winners of the award exemplified that quality of sportsmanship.

Cori Sellers was named the winner of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes award, while Carrion was given the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Scholarship Award Derek Roland and Michael Mathis presented the first annual Parker Mathis Scholarship Award to DeWayne Isaacs.

Erich Baker and Jennifer Richter (not pictured) won Scholar Athlete of the Year Award.The Scholar Athlete of the Year award was given to Jennifer Richter and Erich Baker.

Ryan Raby named Timothy McAllister as the winner of the Brandon Stiwinter Scholarship award, while Frankie Carapazza was named the winner of the Walter Scruggs Scholarship by Scruggs’s sister Cynthia Owens. Cori Sellers and Richard Moses were dual winners of the Booster Club Scholarship.

Dewayne Isaacs received the Parker Mathis Scholarship.The Stan Sloan Scholarship was awarded to Christopher Steven Dills. The award was presented by former Sloan award recipient Jim Breedlove.

Outstanding Athletes of the Year awards went to Jordan Pickens, Ben Carrion, Ashley Culpepper and Tim McAllister.




Ben Carrion and Jordan Pickens received the Tom Raby scholarship. Carrion and Pickens were also named Outstanding Team Athletes of the Year.Cori Sellers and Richard Moses received the Booster Club Scholarship. Sellers also received the FCA Award.Rikki Jay and Ashley Culpepper received individual State Track Champion Awards — Jay for 300m hurdles, and Culpepper for pole vault. Culpepper also received Outstanding Individual Athlete of the Year.
