AVONDALE, Ariz. – Jimmie Johnson survived a close call and a succession of less-than-stellar restarts.

Matt Kenseth couldn't overcome handling problems that kept his car mired in traffic.

And Kevin Harvick, meanwhile, took advantage of Carl Edwards' fuel shortage to win his fourth race of the season in Sunday's AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway, keeping alive his faint hopes of winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship in his final season with Richard Childress Racing.

The net result? Johnson, who finished third, widened his lead over the struggling Kenseth, who ran 23rd, and took a giant step toward his sixth series championship.

Franklin High School's varsity football team has managed to blow out most of the teams in Western North Carolina, putting up win after win. The 2013 FHS football team currently sits on top of the 3A/2A Western North Carolina Athletic Conference with an undefeated record of 10-0.

They began their season with a big win over the defending 1A State Champions, the Murphy Bulldogs, with a score of 41- 17. Big wins like their home opener would define the season thus far with only two close contests.

The Highlands varsity soccer team has had an amazing season and it isn't over yet. On Saturday, the Highlanders hosted the second round of the state play-offs and was able to move past the 14-5-1 Blue Ridge Bobcats.

Highlands entered the contest with a 21-3-1 record with their only losses coming from Tuscola High School, Franklin High School and Rabun Gap Nacoochee School. Despite those losses, the Highlanders went undefeated in their conference winning the Smoky Mountain Conference Championship. In the first round of the playoffs they hosted the Cherryville Ironmen, winning easily by a score of 5-1.
